The Hagley Museum

The Hagley Museum
One of my favorite stops in Delaware is the site of the nation’s BEST gunpowder mill, which is also where the great DuPont industries had their start back in the year 1800.
The United States was a wilderness back in the early days of its settlement. Many of you, I know, are thinking “Hey. It’s STILL a bloody wilderness!” And, you are probably right. That’s ok. We’re used to ourselves and have even learned to deal with it.
That issue however, is not why I’m wasting your time today. I opened with that remark to explain one of the most interesting side trips you can take when you are in what’s called the Mid Atlantic region of the USA.
Pennsylvania and Delaware were two of the first regions of the nation to be occupied by the European settlers in the early 1700’s. These people came to a land of forests, wild animals, indians and not much else. No factories, no prepared food, no housing. Whatever these people needed, they either shipped over from Europe if they were wealthy and lucky enough to get it, or they made it.
Visitors Center
by Ewingjr98
If after a few days in town, you start to think there's not much to do in Dover, stop by the Visitors' Center -- then you will know without a doubt there isn't much to do here (with the exception of the agriculture museum!).
Kidding ... the visitors center, located in the historic area of downtown has maps, museum guides, a small Korean War museum, and a gift shop. It's worth a visit if you want to see the sights!
Annual St. Paddy's Day Parade
by Ewingjr98
Downtown Dover hosts an annual St. Patrick’s Day parade the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day. The event is held on Loockerman and State Streets and it is free! Sponsored by the Downtown Dover Partnership, the parade was in its 16th year in 2009.
Start time is usually 2pm.
BTW, in 2008 police in Delaware arrested 34 people for DUI on St. Patrick's Day and the weekend before the holiday. Have a designated driver or call a cab!
Nascar Races
by bct341
Hmm.. lets see..
Fight unbelievable traffic, maddening crowds,
getting a full workout climbing to your seat which is perched high above an oval track.. dealing with a 150, 000 other people trying to find their seat.. paying $90 to sit on a metal seat... bake in the sun...watch cars go around in a circle.. and put up with 4 hours of noise..
And.. have a blast !!!! :) LOL
Twice a year, Nascar visits Dover racetrack for a weekend of fun. The trucks race on friday, the busch (minor leaque :) ) races saturday.. and the Winston cup (hmm will it be Nextel Cup next year? :) ) races on Sunday. I have tickets to both races and have a blast each time.
I have been to every major american sporting event, seen football (soccer) matches in England..also F1.. Cart and the IRL.. but, nothing compares to the fanatic NASCAR fan. "hey buddy, I don't think your favorite driver can hear you as he goes past at 170mph" :)
Watching a race is like seeing all the NFL football games at the same time because everyone in the stands has their favorite driver....and cheers even if it is only a pass from 20th position to 19th haha.
Over the years, i have seen it change from a 'good ole boy' sport to become more a family sport with women and kids in the stands. Hmm, and those women can get pretty vocal about their favorite drivers LOL.
Costs.. friday and saturday race tickets on in the $30 range.. with specials for kids.
Sunday's race is much more expensive.. my tickets are $90. * a cushion to sit on :)
* binoculars
* camera
* a small bag with some food and lots of water (or beer if you wish) they do have some restrictions on the size of bags you can bring in .
* Suntan lotion
** but the most important is Headsets (preferrably with a scanner or am/fm) or earplugs
* a scanner is cool because you can hear the drivers talk to their pit crews during the race
Port Mahon
by Ewingjr98
Port Mahon is a tiny little port with just a pier a little used marina and a petroleum offload area. The place is old, beat up, and seldom visited...unless you are a bird watcher or you like horseshoe crabs. Port Mahon road runs several miles through wetlands and along the shore of the Delware River offering superb habitat for both. This area also has the occasional fisherman.
Though it is run down, the federal government recently appropriated 8.1 million dollars to repair the shoreline and stabilize the habitat.
Port Mahon Road is at the north end of Little Creek, just a few miles east of Dover (via North Little Creed Rd or South Little Creek Rd)
