Travel Tips for Dover

Delaware License Plate Insanity

by Ewingjr98

The standard Delaware license plate is a simple dark blue background with gold numbers. Across the state you will commonly see old-fashioned black plates with white numbers ranging from 1 to 86999. These plates have become collectors items and show a ridiculous amount of idiocy on the part of some of their owners.... sometimes these plates pass from generation to generation within a family which is cool. The lunacy begin when people sell their plates. This might be the biggest scam going in the state of Delaware. The lower the number, the higher the value of the plate. I have seen 3-digit plates for sale for several thousand dollars, and this site claims that some single-digit plates have sold for as much as $180,000 recently! What a bunch of morons!

dispute in the news

by davecallahan

The Dover newspaper carried a story of how a local firm (with Pennsylvania-Dutch ties) was charged with discrimination because they would not allow employees to have certain extracurricular classes on company property. The classes included tarot card reading, black magic, numerology, psychic reading.
The company argued that they do allow training classes that further the benefit of the company and its employees (like accounting, reflexology, typing) but would not allow that the classes mentioned above would benefit them.

The dispute has gone to the court system where it will take a while to be decided.

Little Creek Wildlife Management area

by davecallahan

Little Creek is a good birding area once you get there and trek back to the towers. It is pleasant in the spring but a bit soggy, so wear good boots/hightops. It is pure agony in early fall when the mosquitoes swarms are large enough to bodily carry you off.

Access to the birding trails are off route 9. A quarter-mile past Pickering Road is the Headquarters entrance. Drive past the buildings (the paved road becomes a dirt road) to find the trails (or stop in the HQ to ask for directions). The trail leads to woods and marsh and large pond. Near the end of the trail is one of the towers where you can get a good view of the marsh birds and wading birds.

You will see warblers, vireos, robins, sparrows, catbird, lots of crows and starlings. From the tower you can see ducks, herons and plenty of gulls.

to get there:
US113 to route 8 (Little Creek Road). take route 8 east to route 9; go south a jog on route 9(main street, then baysidedrive) and look for the roads indicated above.

Little Creek

by Ewingjr98

Not to be confused with the Naval Amphibious Base of the same name, Little Creek, Delaware, is just a tiny little town a few miles east of Dover. With just 195 people, little creek has just a fire department, a few small stores, and a restaurant or two.

Little Creek most significant building is the Old Stone Tavern or the Old Stone House on Main Street. It was built in the early 1800s, and the first record of the building is an 1829 sheriff's sale, and it later came to be owned by Abraham Nowell in 1858. This type of stone house is rare in central Delaware which has very little stone of suitable quality to build a large house.
