Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, born in France in 1771, moved to the United States in 1800 with his father. He had been involved with gunpowder manufacture in France prior to relocation, and discovered that American gunpowder was inferior to that produced in Europe. He drafted a proposal to establish a competitive gunpowder mill, sold the idea to European financial backers, and established what was to become a chemical empire in the new frontier.
The Hagley grounds also include the Georgian-style mansion Eleutherean Mills, the first duPont family home in
America. Built by DuPont Company founder E.I. duPont in 1803.

NASCAR is the big sporting event in Dover. The races on this"Monster Mile" oval draw over 140,000 spectators, quadrupling the size of this town of 35,000. The races are held twice a year in early June and late September.
Parking can be a real problem for the Sunday Nextel Cup race. One of the best ideas is to park at the Blue Hen Mall on Route 13 south ... they offer parking for $20 per vehicle that includes a bus ride for all of your passengers.
Bring your own drinks and food to the track. Hamburgers can run $5-7 while a 16 oz bottle of water is around $4. All fans may bring a small cooler with drinks in cans or plastic bottles. No glass!
Race tickets cost between $55 and $98 for grandstand seats.
Though maybe not officially the world's smallest, the Barclay Town Office is somewhat of a spectacle due to its minuscule size. The entire building is only about 12 feet by 8 feet. Luckily the town has only one employee, its part-time clerk/treasurer. Somehow the poor lady has to share the building with the town's 3 elected commissioners.
Barclay is on Rt 301 in Maryland about 20 miles from Dover, Delaware.
