Travel Tips for Wilmington

Temporary visit by the Amistad

by dlandt

This ship happened to be docked in Wilmington when I arrived. They laid out an impressive display of the slave mutiny on board, and opened the ship up to visits. The ship itself is a recreation of the original, but is larger and equipped with engines. I have to say, that despite this ship's higher profile, I really enjoyed the Kalmar nyckel better. Their staff is a lot friendlier, too. I wouldn't go so far as to call this a tourist trap though.

neighborhoods

by davecallahan

The communities that developed in the city of Wilmington over the last 150 years have given birth to invisible but real boundaries called neighborhoods. A certain pride is born in each member of a given neighborhood and they will tell you the strengths of their group as compared to any other group; even though the differences are not obvious or even important to the tourist visiting the city.

There are three sectors to Wilmington: north of Brandywine Creek, East of I-95 and West of I-95.

The neighborhoods in the first sector are:
Brandywine Hills, Brandywine Village, Eastlawn, Harlan, 9th Ward Area, Prices Run, Riverside, Triangle

The neighborhoods in the second sector are:
11th St. Bridge, Downtown, East Side, Midtown Brandywine, Quaker Hill, Riverfront, Ships Tavern, Southbridge, Trinity Vicinity, Upper East Side, West Center City

The neighborhoods in the third sector are:
Bayard Square, Browntown, Canby Park, Flats, Forty Acres, Greenhill , Happy Valley, Hedgeville, Highlands, Hilltop, Little Italy, St. Elizabeth Area, Tilton, Trolley Square, Union Park Gardens, Wawaset, Westmoreland, West Hill

Birding in Brandywine Park

by davecallahan

Brandywine Creek State Park is located north of Wilmington, very near Winterthur.

The park has a Nature Center near the entrance where you park. Birding trails can be reached from the Nature Center. There also are bird feeding stations in this area which provide good places to spot birds. You can also find parking on route 92 near Thompson's Bridge. In either case, follow the trails along the Brandywine River to get good sightings or go into the field areas as far away from the picnicers as possible.

Seasonal migratory birds are Warblers and Woodpeckers, Nuthatch and Bluebirds, Wrens and Vireos.
The park provides a special sanctuary area for larger birds of prey (eagles and hawks). Check at the Nature Center for a local map to that area.

to get there:
take Kennett Pike north to connect to Montchanin Road. continue north on Montchanin to the intersection of Adams Dam Road and Thompson's Bridge Road. either of these roads will take you to the park.

More than just a restaurant

by Rhondaj about Kahunaville

Kahunaville was at the riverfront area long before the shipyard shops, the riverwalk, the Bank One Center, and all the restaurants that have been popping up recently. I don't know how to describe the place: part restaurant, part concert theater, part gaming entertainment. I know the sight of the huge volcano as you drive along I-95 has always been a fascinating sight. Go check the place out!

CLOSED! RUMOUR HAS IT THAT AS THE RIVERFRONT IS GEARING ITSELF MORE TOWARDS OFFICES AND APARTMENTS, KAHUNAVILLE WAS DEEMED TOO LOUD AND ROWDY FOR THE CHANGING ENVIRONMENT.

Food is pretty good, expensive, and slow service

by tpangelinan about Walters Steak House

The food is pricy. We have eaten here six or seven times. Ever since our favorite waiter Rob left, it's just not the same. The filet with the white lumb crab meat on top is good, but at $36.00, it should be good. Make a reservation if you go, and have an appletini, apple pucker and grey goose, but have it at the bar. Set aside lots and lots of time to have dinner, as it is super slow, and can take three or four hours to get your complete dinner here from appetizers to dessert. The Constantinou family is famous for beef here in Wilmington, so the food is excellent. Not for the faint of wallet.
