My parents loved it

This Inn is on property formerly owned by the DuPonts (the Winterthur estate, itself well worth a visit). The restaurant (Krazy Kat's) is well-known as a high-end dinner spot, with breakfasts pretty ordinary but certainly edible. I haven't been there for lunch. This would be the closest hotel to downtown Wilmington (5 mi or so) that has pretty grounds, gardens, and separate freestanding buildings rather than cookie cutter rooms. So if you want to feel like you are not staying in a CBD but still be close to one, this would be the best option for Wilmington. It is in the middle of nowhere, comparatively speaking, so you will need a car or local to get anywhere. There are many nice estates in the area, so you could also take a scenic walk with complete safety [other than avoiding cars; no sidewalks].

My parents used to stay downtown, but I suspect they will want to return to the Inn next year. The Inn also recently won an award from Travel & Leisure as the world's best hotel for $250 or less.

Unique Quality: Historical site, restored buildings. Quiet and pastoral but convenient to Rt 52, US 95 and major Brandywine Valley attractions. Between downtown Wilmington and Longwood Gardens. Staff all seemed nice and helpful. Some of the rooms are split-level.
