Hi, we are travelling to Anna Maria island 19th feb for three days before taking a Carribbean cruise from Tampa. We are british, any suggestions on what to do please? we are staying at Harrington House, any comments? Many thanks JuliaE
I Love Anna Maria Island primarily because it is unspoiled without massive condos' for the most part. Hard to find in Florida anymore. On Anna Maria itself there isn't much to do unless you want to just relax and take in the scenery or go for a dip. There's always parasailing and snorkeling and if you're adventurous theres a company that you can kayak with to Egmont Key which is a beautiful island off the coast of Anna Maria with a cool lighthouse. If it's shopping you want you are just a short distance from St Armands Circle in Sarasota. Very unique stores and restaurants. Also in Sarasota theres the Ringling Museum, very good, which I now hear are offering segway tours.
Anna maria island is a fantastic spot to vacation. The Sandbar and Waterfront restuarants are great. Inshore fishing is also a blast. At the iga on the north end of Anna maria Island is the old Iga (historic building) which has at great internet cafe http://www.annamariacafe.com/ on the first floor and the best day spa I've been to in my travels on the second floor Body and Sol http://annamariadayspa.com/
Anna Maria Island is a beautiful place to travel to. Located about an hour south of Tampa, it is a tropical getaway. I was there a week. The first two days Tropical Storm Alberto hit Florida just north of Tampa. Lots of rain and wind, the storm cleared out and the weather was BEAUTIFUL!!! (note the surfer surfing Tropical Storm Alberto about 12 hours before)
A week at Bradenton beach was an awesome time.The condo's at Runaway bay were a short walk to the gulf. The sand is sugar white,the gulf showed many colors,blue,green.silver. The water was a little cool for swimming but you could wade very comfortably.
The food was great,Cafe on the beach offered an all you can eat pancake & sausage breakfest.Brian's sunnyside up cafe has a down home. The peir had excellent blackend grouper served with a tropical cole slaw (all you can eat).The sand bar had great service with a seafood platter that was great,the sunset was blocked by the clouds on our visit, they also had a fine island salad. The Anna Maria oyster bar served a mighty fine gumbo and the steamed oysters were to die for. I also tried the escargot but i had a hard time with the tought of eating snails (they reminded me of slugs) go figure.The Salmon at Carabba's was very tastey.
