Travel Tips for Bonita Springs
Searching For Seashells by the Seashore!
by deecat
Unlike other Florida beaches, the Lee County beaches are left natural.
By leaving the beaches natural, seaweed remains on the shore in what is called a "wrack line" created by the tide. This line ensures that the birds and other wildlife aren't robbed of a valuable food source.
The Lee Island Coast is "home to over 400 species of shells." Thanks to ideal Gulf currents, more shells wash up here than any other place in North America!
Allan and I, like countless other visitors and residents consider "searching for seashells by the seashore" a favorite pastime.
hey do have a "live shelling" law that encourages you to leave all live shells and take only the uninhabited treasures found along the beach. "Live" means any shell with a creature still inside.
These are some shells you may find on the Lee Island Coast:
Sunray Venus
Thorny Sea Star
Horse Conch
Florida Fighting Conch
Sand Dollar
Lightning Whelk
Angel Wing
Common Nutmeg
Shark Eye
True Tulip
Calico Scallop Both Allan and I found shells, and the ones that I found, I gave to my little neighbor girls (ages 3 and 5). They adored them, and play with them, pretending they are on the beach collecting shells!
That keeps me connected to my wonderful memories of "searching for seashells by the seashore"!
Visit the Edison/Ford Winter Estates
by deecat
In 1885 Thomas Edison started spending his winters in the little southwest Florida town called Fort Myers. He built a home and laboratory on 14 acres on the south side of the Caloosahatchee River (accessible from the north by weekly mail boats). Later, at a convention, Edison met Henry Ford who started visiting him at his Florida home. The friendship grew until Mr. Ford was able to purchase the property adjoining Edison's.
Both of these famous men's estates can be visited through guided tours conducted daily:
Monday-Saturday:
9 AM-4 PM
Sunday:
Noon-4 PM
Also, visitors to the Edison-Ford Winter Estates now have the opportunity to experience Mr. Edison's favorite pastime, his
ELECTRIC LAUNCH. Edison used his launch called "Reliance" to travel, entertain, and fish the Caloosahatchee River.
Visitos can step aboard one of four replica's of his launch for a thirty-minute river cruise along the banks of the river.
