Be careful when boating in Florida waters
by TheTravelSlut
Manatees (aka: sea cows) are a protected and threatened mammal that live in warm Florida waters.
They are observed up rivers, in canals, in open waters and bays, and on both coasts.
Manatees like to swim below the surface of waters and that makes them susceptible to being hit by boats.
Even though I live in Manatee County and on the Manatee River, I have only seen 2 manatees in 4 years of boating.
If you ever wanted to see them up close, the nearby Mote Aquarium and South Florida Museum in Bradenton both house live manatees.

People might miss the beach if they have never been to the beach before. The beaches are only satisfactory. In west Bradenton, you can drive out to Anna Maria island where the coast is entirely beaches.

I grew up in Bradenton; born there in 1961 and lived there until I left for college in 1979. I go back fairly often because I still have family there.
It has grown a lot since I lived there, but parts of it retain a sort of small town feel. Something that hasn't changed a lot are the beaches. The sand is still brilliant white, the water of the Gulf of Mexico is still a million shades of blue and green and is still wonderfully warm and soothing. I have been to many beaches, but none can compare to those on the barrier islands off the coast of Manattee county.
There is actually a fair amount of history to Bradenton. The Spanish Conquistadores launched several of their searches for the fabled "Fountain of Youth" from this area. A visit wouldn't be complete without visiting De Soto's Landing, Braden Castle, Old Town Bradenton Park and the Bishop Planetarium and Museum.
