My safety net for last minute transport is Supershuttle. You can't go wrong and they can swipe your credit card in the van and probably your most economical option.

There is another shuttle service that I have used of out PIE when needing private/direct service - Leros Point To Point. But, no worries...even though PIE is advertised as small, there are plenty of shuttle options from which to choose upon arrival. You should be fine.
Since the main attraction is the beach, then you must not forget your swim suit. However, there are lots of shops along the beach that sell swim suits, shorts, and tank tops. DON'T FORGET THE SUNSCREEN! The sun was intense there. Even if you have visited the tanning bed I would still suggest a minimum SPF of 15.
You can also get the trolley bus down to Pass-a-Grill. This has been a popular desination with the stars since the 1930's. there are many art deco style buildings, like the hotels on the beach.
The beach is also nice white sand.
We stayed overnight one night in Clearwater right by the airport. This was the view from our hotel window. We ate dinner at one restaurant. The next day we started out for Jacksonville via Ocala
I have little or no sense of Clearwater's identity. The City webpage says
Literally translated "Clear Water" from the native Indian "Pocotopaug", the area was named for its abundant fresh springs along the shore. Settled by colonists in the mid-1830s, it was not until the 1890s that Clearwater gained a reputation as a resort community.
Located on a high bluff, it is the county seat of Pinellas County, and is the 'gateway' to the west coast beaches.
