Shephards is great for families
We spent the first week of April at Shepherds Resort with extended family and had a great experience. We had pool side suites and found everything we needed to settle in with kids, parents and grandparents. The rooms were clean, good kitchenette facilties and worked great for being on the beach or by pool for the day and having people go back and forth. They have a great family atmosphere but still enjoyed the music and other things available for teenagers. The food was also awesome in the dining room and the view of the beach is great. We would go back here again--very affordable.
Do not stay here!
Advertisements are deceptive. Photos of "beach are from 100s of yards away or out-of-date. Their "beach" is the size of an average back yard and you have no access at all to the real beach (surrounded by fences and rocks). There are always many speedboats just 10-20 feet from your kids in the water. You will not be able to sleep on floors 3 or 4 because of the loud nightclub music going until 2 am nightly. This is NOT a place to bring young children. And be careful, management is stubborn, uncaring and will not give you your money back under any circumstances
Single Male loved the action. Not a family destination
Just returned from 4 night stay at Shepard's for friend's bachelor party. This is THE place to be in Clearwater Beach. Tons of beautiful girls at pool or beach, and awesome bands in tiki area. Getting a beer is no problem with multiple bars and waitresses. This is NOT a family place. If I had brought my family here, I'd probably be getting divorced right now. Be ready to party and definitely stay until Monday because Sunday is OFF THE HOOK!! Be advised: Cab fare to Tampa/Ybor City/Mans Venus is $40-50 dollars. Bring your "A" Game.
I have never had a worse experience. My family and I arrived at Shepherds on May 31st only to find the owner of this so called resort yelling at customers because of a mistake that he had made. That should have been our first clue to the hell that we would be getting ourselves into. While checking in they lost our reservations for a second adjoining room and they told us that we didn't have one until we pulled out the letter of confirmation that we received from an internet site that offers good deals on hotel rooms. We then managed to find our rooms only to find that they were not adjoining like we had requested. We then went out onto the balcony for the so called view that "directly overlooked the Gulf of Mexico" only to find that the view was mostly of the parking lot. We then called down to the front desk and asked if any adjoining rooms would be available the next day. We also said we were dissappointed with the view. The manager named Kay rudely said no and proceeded to tell us that it was not their problem because we had booked our reservations online through a discount site. We then proceeded to call the site and they said they would contact Shepherds. When we called the discount site again they told us that according to the manager we were harrassing them (note we only called them two times) and they also said that if we wanted to leave we would be charged for two days. We decided to stay for the two days and then called the discount site to find us reservations at another hotel. The discount site then called the owner of Shepherds to say we would be leaving and the owner (Paul) said that he decided to charge us for 4 days because of the disruption we had caused. Needless to say we booked it out of there and we still don't know how many days we have been charged for. By the way, DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU HAVE A FAMILY. Drunks wander the streets and parking lot in front of the hotel at all hours, and during the horrible two days that we will never forget we never saw a security officer. The music from the bar is so loud you can't even get to sleep and the beach is pathetic at best. I apologize for this review being so long but it is hard to put into words the hell that we went though at this resort.
Spring Break All Year
I was here recently to attend a wedding perfomed right on the beach. That was nice, if you want a wedding "a la spring break, hip hop style." Live music plays from 12 noon to 2 AM. This place is fine if you just want to party, and mingle with the ladies who aren't afraid to strut their stuff. But if you're looking for a place to relax on the beach with peace and quiet at night, this place is NOT for you.
Decent accomodations - Management rude/awful-not for family
Don't even know where to begin. Didn't read reviews before visiting because we were there with a family reunion, and that is where everyone was staying. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite with an adjoining room, the rooms were pretty clean and nice sized. We had to pay 2 nights up front for both rooms, with the understanding that if we had any cancellations it was to be done before 7 days of that time. Well, we needed to cancel the one bedroom room for just one night but keep everything else. We called on Tuesday evening around 5, exactly one week before arriving. They were not going to do it because since checkin was at 4 it technically was within the 7 days. After arguing endlessly with Kay, the manager, she allowed it, but made me redo the reservations so we had to pay an additional 2 days in advance (because now it was a new reservation). I didn't have the warm fuzzies after talking to her on the phone, and even had less at check in. She made it known that she had to deal with me because of the difficult reservation and that she wanted both rooms paid in full for the entire stay at check in, and she quizzed me endlessly about how many people were going to be in the rooms (They tried to charge $10 a day extra for my 2 yr old). Everytime we were in the registration area she was fussing at some employee, whether it was for a newspaper on the counter, or something on her desk, she seemed unfazed that customers were listening. The pool was way too warm, we had to get out to cool off (it was high 80's when we were there), and the hot tub was really hot, which I like, but several of our bathing suits faded out in it. They had music going on in the tiki bar constantly which was nice when hanging at pool. The beach was tiny and backed up to the channel so it got deep really fast. We walked 4 hotels down everyday to go to the public beach so the kids could actually play. For our reunion we had booked the patio room (a nice glassed in room in the restaurant), and to keep it private, we all had to pay for our buffet meals for that dinner and the next mornings breakfast a few weeks ahead of time in order to reserve the room (the buffet after tip and soft drink was $28), they said at most they may have to put up to 8 other people in the room with us. Needless to say, they had sat over 35 people in the room with us leaving us not enough room for our party to sit, they tried to have a husband and wife sit separate- they ended up sitting away from all of us against a window). For any of us to get up to go to the buffett several others had to get up. When complained to management was told we could only get half the room and he basically didn't care. The whole kicker to the whole dining room issue was that they still had half the restaurant unseated, and for some reason felt that they needed to sit all these people in the reserved room. The food was fabulous though. The breakfast buffet was priced reasonably and was probably the best food I have ever had on a buffet. The night club is evidently a happening spot in town, the music could be heard and the vibrations felt in the tower rooms until 2 in the morning, and for some reason the pool closed at 11 (it wouldn't disturb people in the rooms because they couldn't be louder than the music) so you couldn't do that with the kids after hours. There were drunks all over the place (literally couples fighting in the parking lots and people not able to walk). If you are a spring breaker or in for nightlife close this would be the place, but definately not for families. Management just plain rude, and that trickled down through the staff.
visited shephards june 19th thru 26th with my wife and 2 16 yr. old girls, overall its a good place, music at tiki bar from 1:00pm to 11:00pm, beach is small, dance club open until 2:30 am, dont get a room above or near it if you want to sleep before 2:30, not much for 16 yr olds to do and not really a kid place but good in general
Worst buffet ever -expecially for the price
We ate at Shepard's buffet last nigt, July 25th. We brought some friends from out of town and we looked forward to giving them a treat. Instead, it turned out to be the worst meal we have ever had. We tired so many things on the menu to find something worth eating, but to no avail! For the price of $21.95 we thought we'd find something worht eating. So, we have to highly recommend avoidingn Shepard's restaurant unless you want to waste your money on perfectly awful food!
We drove looking for a place to eat in Clearwater beach. My daughter commented as we passed Shepherds that someone at school had been there and liked it. So we gave it a try! What a mistake! Over the top waiter - Didn't leave much of a tip.
Food looked good but was tastless and bland.
Felt pressured to eat quickly
Would not recommend at all. Try Tex Mex on I60 and IS19 - wonderfull everything!
