More about Wakulla Suites

Loved the Wakulla

by TripAdvisor Member jim6918

Stayed at the Wakulla based on personal recommendation of another suites hotel that was closed due to hurricane damage. Glad we got the recomendation! We stayed in the seperate unit closest to the beach, in the second floor room closest to the beach. Very clean, quiet, spacious, and we always had parking although that can be a problem in the main property. Great value for our famiy of four. The kitchen was very nice, and we used it every morning for breakfast. The beach right in front of the hotel was pretty clean and appeared very safe, whether early in the morning or late at night. Close to many stores (including RonJons) and restaurants. No question I would stay here again and recomend to other families.

home sweet home

The first time my family stayed at the Wakulla was 12 years ago . We have been back every year but one since then. The family atmosphere is great. We love it all.It feels like we are going home when we go back there. I could never see us going anywhere else. THANKS WAKULLA!!!!

Overrated

I stayed here for two weeks in August 2004.I was disappointed and appalled.I had read such good reviews i thought i could not go wrong. However on arrival the staff were not very helpful.I asked them where the nearest internet access was and they said at local library 2 miles away. There was internet access at the hotel next door.I asked them where the nearest kentuckf fried chicken store was and they said they did not know.It was basically across the road. There was no parking on the site for my vehicle because all the spaces had been taken.I had four suitcases with my party which consisted of wife and two children. There were no lifts to first floor. They hotel needed renovating it was dull and it smelt due to nearby bins. The air conditioning did not work properly and the first time the maid clean the room i had to complain because she never even spread the beds. The television volume was controlled. The only positive was that the small coffees shop in reception was clean and sold nice coffee and cakes. The rooms were big but the above spoilt my stay there.Persons should make up there own minds but this was a disappointing and vastly overrated place to stay.

Lots of space for the money

by TripAdvisor Member horseneck

Just got back from cocoa beach. Stayed at this hotel, really motel for 3 nights. Nothing fancy, but lots of space. 2 bedrooms, small kitchen, table, good size livingroom area. Could be a little cleaner. but it wasn't awful. Court yard is lush with palms, bamboo, and tropical plants. That makes the place, if it wasn't so lush it would just be a motel. I guess that some people come here for months. Walk across the street( not a busy street) and there is the long, wide beautiful beach. They have a deck and shower tables right before the beach. Cocoa beach is like a lot of resort area beaches, hotels, surf shops... It was nice, next time I would get a room with a view... of the ocean. But for the money this was good.

Great family place

by A TripAdvisor Member

This will be our third year staying here! We have 4 children and it is a great place for kids. It's definately not fancy but that's why we love it. Very relaxing pool area and close to the beach. An added bonus is the kiddy pool alongside the regular sized pool.

So So

by A TripAdvisor Member

Went there for spring break 2005. Wife and I plus our 4 children. Room was $150 per night. It’s definitely not a 5 star but okay. Only real issue was our 11 month old crawling on the floor. Carpets appeared clean but after walking on them all day we noticed our feet where pretty dirty. We asked for the complementary high chair and it was delivered with mouldy food under the seat cushion. The place just needs a good scrubbing. If you don’t mind that stuff, then it’s a great place.

Great Place!

by TripAdvisor Member karenjob

This is a great place to stay with family. The units are a spacious two bedrooms (beds very comfortable), 1 bath, living room with pull out couch, and kitchenette with dining area. They are clean with daily maid service with attention paid to details. We always had plenty of towels and since there was a lot of family in and out, it was great. Also, the kitchen is well stocked with cooking and eating supplies. We were in town for a 50th Wedding Anniversary - way to go Gene & Jackie! - from April 7 to 12, 2005 and a few families traveling to Florida all stayed here. The grounds are beautiful, the pool clean and heated with plenty of lounges for everyone to sit/lay poolside complete with a kiddie pool and shuffleboard. The units also have gas grills and seating areas and tables in the tropical courtyards and the suites are a short walk to the Atlantic ocean. Don't miss the great coffee shop that also has some lunch items and a game room for the kids. The only drawback was there is just one television in the living room so no watching TV in bed before sleep. Otherwise, a wonderful place to stay!

great value

by TripAdvisor Member swim4gold

Just returned from our first trip to Cocoa Beach-had a great time. Found the hotel on the internet by accident and after reading the reviews decided to give it a try. Stayed in an oceanside room-my 5 year old loved the short walk to the beach. The suite had plenty of room, very comfortable. The rooms were neat-not spotless. Staff was very friendly and helpfull. Only problem was the lack of a TV in the bedroom-can only watch so much cartoon network!!! (oh yea-bring a hair dryer if you need one) It was a great place at a reasonable price

Great for a family

by TripAdvisor Member Largang

I booked this hotel after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor. Some reviews were good some bad. We were completely satisfied with our stay. We booked a room in the section closest to the beach. The motel is long with a number of sections. So, if you want to be by the pool you should say so. We chose to be by the beach (2 min walk from our room), and it was great. The pool had been taken over by a group of seniors anyway (no offence, but the teens did not want to hang with the seniors). The room had two bedrooms, livingroom, a good sized bath, and a nice little kitchen. You can sit in a chair on the outdoor walkway and see the ocean to the right. I would recommend an upper floor room (two storey motel). The place was clean and well maintained. A grocery store is a short drive away so you can save some $$ on restaurant food and cook your own. Bring your own can opener.

Orlando to Cocoa Beach

by bride06

I would like to know how I can get to Cocoa Beach from Orlando. I will not be driving, so would need some kind of bus. Would I need to get a taxi? I hope someone can help me!

Also one more question, how far is Cocoa Beach from Melbourne?

Thanks!

We took the city bus from Cocoa Beach to Miami Beach at night.

That was not a good experience. The driver actually got off the bus and went to dinner. We were the only two people on the bus in a not so nice neighborhood.

Although we don't live in the Cocoa Beach area, we spend 4-6 weeks there each winter so I'll try to answer a few of your questions. Cocoa Beach is about 85 km (45-50 miles) from Orlando, a bit less from the Orlando airport. It's a straight shot down Florida highway 528 (called the Bee Line) from Orlando to C Beach, usually taking about an hour. I have taken a shuttle from the airport to C. Beach but not from the city proper, and not recently. I've used MC Transportation 321-436-4154; 321-436-7108 and Art's Transportation 321-783-2112 or toll free 800-567-5099. I don't have web sites for them. A taxi would not be feasible in my opinion. If you're staying in the Orlando area your hotel should be able to assist you in this. You might be able to get some info from these web sites: cocoabeach.com; orlandoinfo.com; travelsaverguides.com; see-spacecoast.com. An area newspaper is floridatoday.com. Melbourne is about 60 km (35 miles) south of C. Beach. If you're looking for a place to stay in C. Beach, every year we stay at the moderately priced Wakulla Suites. The accommodations have two bedrooms, kitchen, and living area. It is not 5-star but clean and well maintained and about 100 m from the ocean (wakullasuites.com). If you have any other questions but don't want to clutter up the VT site you can reach us at: grossjk@verizon.net

I don't live in that area but I travel and have traveled there a bit. I think there are buses going that way all the time. But If you are staying in a hostel in the area you can check the notice board and ask around maybe you will find a ride from another traveler going there. I've done that before both needing a lift and giving a lift with no problems. Mind you, I wouldn't hitch there but other travelers seem to be a good bet.

Off The Beaten Track

by Hunita

Travelling to Florida in January and looking for places to visit. Will be in Miami initially and then will head off for about 10 days. Probably go down to KW for a couple of days and then up the Gulf Coast, even round the panhandle, if there are good places. Maybe fly back from Tampa, but nothing booked yet. Not into theme parks or organised touristy things. Looking for laid back places to stay. Enjoy beaches, walking and the atmosphere of a place - exploring. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Maybe too organised for you but I would recommend Billie Swamp Safari run by the Seminole Tribe. We had a great day and night there staying in the Chickee huts. The Seminolee museum a few miles away was great too. Definately off the beaten track. Sign posted from Aligator alley I remember.

Could have dinner at Pine Island resort about 1 hour up from Key West. They pick you up in a boat and take you out to their island. The food is very good and the island and restaurant are dead sexy. Can stay there too if you happen to have too much money to carry around. Dinner was very reasonable for what you get in return.

If you are headed out around the panhandle try St. George Island. The island is connected by bridge to the mainland nearly due south of Tallahassee. Another neat place is Wakulla Spirings State park south of Tallahassee. The lodge is a classic hunting lodge from the 1920's.

In Orlando I would spend an hour at Leu Gardens (google it they have a web site.)

On the east coast I would visit the Merrit Island National Widlife refuge. Go to the north end of the city of Titusville and take the road to the beach. There are great wildlife drives and some nice trails (if the ground is dry and the fires are not bad.)

Enjoy!

There is this really cool small town near Tampa Bay called Tarpon Springs. It's all all-Greek town, which you wouldn't expect to see in Florida. The town is known for its great Greek food and sponge diving (yes! the tours to watch sponge divers are a little cheesy --as is this town-- but you'll never forget it).

For a beautiful little beach town, you may want to stop in Sanibel Island or Captiva Island (they are next to each other on the west coast). But, from what you said in your post, it looks like Key West will meet almost all your needs. It's laid back, you can walk almost the whole thing and it has a great atmosphere. The only thing it doesn't have is a beautiful (or even semi-beautiful) beach. Besides that, you don't need too many days there to really get a feel for the place but I think you'll love it.
