Travel Tips for Daytona Beach

MM 829.5 Caribbean Jacks

by grandmaR

The former English Jim's has undergone a sea change, and is now Caribbean Jacks. There are new fixed piers, a pool, and new showers etc. There is a boaters lounge with TV and internet line. There is cable TV at the dock. The promised restaurant has now been built. Parks is within walking distance and is very good, and cheap (has early bird specials from $8-11). The rates have risen dramatically -- It is now $1.50/ft and $4.00 for 30 amp (plus tax of course) and there is a charge for cable TV too. Fuel (diesel) is $1.169/gal. Caribbean Jack's said there is no charge for dinghys to tie up if they just want to shlep down to Publix - just if they want to use the facilities, which includes the hot tub, heated pool and showers I guess.

Enjoying the "World's Most Famous Beach"

by BeachTom218

Within the category of "urban beaches of Florida," Daytona has one of the best. The "beach" actually stretches about 25 miles through several adjoining towns. Young people congregate near the Daytona pier; retirees and families prefer the Ormond or D.B. Shores sections.
To drive a car onto the beach costs $5. Entrance ramps are found along Route A1A about every quarter-mile. However, there are numerous public parking lots where you can park for free and walk a few hundred feet to the beach. Within central Daytona Beach a muncipal parking garage (next to the Ocean City convention hall) usually allows 2 hours of free parking; all day parking costs $5. NOTE: If you "borrow" a parking space at a gift shop or a motel, you may end up being towed.
The surf is shallow and safe for little kids near shore. Further out, the waves are considered respectable by surfers.
During Spring Break , college kids from throughout the East gather on the sand. The area becomes boisterous at times, but beach rangers keep things under control. (Drinking on the beach is technically illegal; disguise your beer cans.)
Occasionally a shark nips a surfer but injuries are seldom serious. More annoying are the jellyfish that show up for a few days each year. Overall, the beach is clean, safe and fun. Water temperatures are comfortable May through October, slightly nippy to downright cold other months.
Beach driving is still allowed on about 50 percent of the beach. Speed limit is 10 mph and enforced severely. No night driving or camping is allowed. Most of the beach is hard-packed sand, but some spots get soupy or soft and can bog down a car -- usually a beach ranger or another tourist will help push you free if you get stuck.
Skimpy beachwear, such as a thong, is OK on the beach itself, but cover up if you stroll into restaurants and gift shops -- Daytona sometimes enforces its anti-nudity ordinance.

by doug48

""world's most famous beach""

the area around present day daytona beach was originally inhabited by the timucuan native american tribe. the town of daytona beach was founded in 1870 and was named after matthias d. day. the population of daytona beach grew with henry flagler's florida east coast railway in the 1880's. the florida east coast railway made it easy for northern tourists to travel to daytona beach and was instrumental in developing daytona beach into the popular tourist destination that it is today. promoters of daytona beach called daytona the "world's most famous beach" in the 1920's. today over 8 million tourists come to daytona beach each year for it's beautiful beach and special events such as speed week, bike week, and spring break.

daytona is famous for it's motor sports events. begining in 1902 the flat hard packed sand beach was used for automobile and motorcycle races. in 1936 the first stock car race was run on the daytona beach road course. the road course was partly run on US A1A and on the beach. in 1959 william france created NASCAR and built the daytona international speedway. for those interested in stock car and motorcycle racing daytona beach hosts a number of events each year for the race fan.

The Human Canvas - album 1

by V_Minx

Art takes many forms and some are more expressive than others. I admire the boldness of these artists and their live canvases. In some instances there is a delicate balance between ther perception of art and potential obsentity. Hopefully you view this material as a unique and bold act of creativity.
