Loving the beach

by beachbabe2

We are staying in Destin or South Walton later this year. There are great homes in both areas and wanting to know which is best for vacationing. We are working with a company Beach Seekers http://www.beachseekers.com and they have beautiful homes in both areas. Ideas anyone?

We always try to stay in Ft. Walton Beach, because we can usually get a lower price on the same type of condo. A couple years ago we saved $500 a week versus the Destin condo prices.

We also like the fact the the traffic on the main road is much lower than in Destin. Additionally, the beaches seemed somewhat less crowded than in Destin.

Destin has the advantage in the closeness & quantity of places to shop and eat though. But if you don't mind a 10 minute drive to get to somewhere you want to visit in Destin, then try Ft. Walton Beach.

Travel Tips for Destin

what the fuss was about

by richiecdisc

Swimming with manatees that very morning was great but pulling out of Crystal River, FL we knew we were starting a long drive a bit later than we had hoped. But that was okay, it was only the third day of a six month trip and we were far from tired. We also had a very loose plan as to where we wanted to be each day. There were no reservations so we could stay wherever we wanted or so we thought. It was a pretty boring ride, not along the coast as you might romanticize it. If you took that route it would take days, something neither of wanted to do. Of course, we eventually did make our way to the coast just around dinner time and conveniently in the town of Destin, home to McGuire's Brewpub.

The town itself was disappointing and the beach or what we could see of it didn't look all that inviting. McGuire's had been on my wish list since my first trip across country but I just never seemed to be able to squeeze it in. It was either the wrong time of day or I was in a hurry to get back home, not wanting to spend another night on the road in Florida of all places, my home state. The place was quite touristy but fun and though the beers were less than mind blowing, their stout was well enough crafted and went down easily after the drive. When we saw Sheppard's Pie on the menu the die was cast for a good meal to round out the beery experience. It would have been an easy place to hang out with an entertaining bartender and happy hour prices. But we still had some driving to do and weren't exactly sure where we'd stay that night. The bartender told us to make sure to not miss a particular stretch of beach on our way out so we headed that way in hopes of catching it before it got dark. Once we crossed a causeway bridge we finally saw what the fuss was about as far as beaches go. There were huge white sand dunes and nice houses with beautiful views. We did some beach combing, collecting shells and nearly forgetting that we weren't on a small weekend beach trip.

Emerald Coast

by cobrioc

Beaches of the Emerald Coast. The beauty of its sunny shores is matched only by the charm of its seaside communities. Inland you'll find family amusements, museums, historic tresures, fun souvenir and special shops, and exquite waterfront dining with view that will leave you brethless.
Destin is one of Florida's best-kept secrets, a small fishing village that has blossomed into a lovely piece of paradise replete with sparkling green waters and pristine beaches.

Ciao Bella

by Ewingjr98

Featuring Italian and pizza, Ciao Bella is one of the little known but great restaurants in Destin. It sits next to McGuire's and just over the bridge from Okaloosa Island, so it should be plenty busy, but lucky for its customers it is not too crowded. I had just pizza there (a great thin-crust sausage, pepperoni, and mushroom pizza for about $16), but their traditional Italian food also looked good. The offer indoor dining in a clean and new restaurant or outdoor dining along busy Hwy 98.

Walking distance from here to McGuires, AJs, the Boathouse.

Delicious Pizzaria

by Aliseeya about Tony's Ristorante

Tony's Ristorante is located in the Destin Commons, right next to Rave Movie Theater. It's the perfect place to get a bite to eat after day of shopping, or before seeing a movie. The food is fabulous -- their pizzas are incredible and they offer a variety of other Italian dishes. The interior is very simple yet cosy and they also have outdoor tables -- perfect for people watching or just enjoying the wonderful weather! I love all of their pizzas, but my favorite dish is their fried ravoli. Its sooooo yummy.

Fun in The Sun!

by Aliseeya

Although Destin offers vacationers a variety of activities, some of the most fun are found on the beach! Making sand castles, collecting shells, burying people in sand, all of these are great fun. You can pick up shovels and other sand toys at any souvenir shop in Destin (The Palace, Alvin's Island, etc), not to mention Target and Walmart. You can also buy inflatable rafts, floats, noodles, and body boards to play with in the water.

Remember to put on sunscreen (especially on cloudy days!) and have fun!
