Travel Tips for Destin

A hidden treasure

by Azonie

Eden Gardens State Park, located near Point Washington FL about 24 miles east of Destin.

The focal point of this park is a beautifully renovated, two-story house with elegant white columns and wrap-around porch. Surrounded by moss-draped live oaks and ornamental gardens, the Wesley house inspires visions of hoop skirts and landed gentry. The park is part of the estate owned in the 1800s by the Wesleys, a wealthy Florida timber family. In 1963, Lois Maxon bought and renovated the home, creating a showplace for her family heirlooms and antiques. The collection of Louis XVI furniture is the second largest in the United States.

We visited the park on a Tuesday and wouldn't you know it, it was one of the days that the house wasn't being shown. *sigh*

The grounds are absolutely beautiful though so we still enjoyed our time there and it's well worth the drive out from Destin. Not only that but you can stop at Pompano Joe's either coming or going. :-) The park is loaded with just a TON of magnolia and huge oak trees. The rose garden was nice but not as magnificent as they boast of on the parks website. But still nice enough.

The Back Porch

by mrsibf about The Back Porch

On the beach - literally - with very casual atmosphere, friendly service, and reasonable prices. Fish, of course! Done just about any way you want it. Try the bronzed grouper sandwich. Bronzed is somewhere between grilled and blackened.

Bluepoint

by Aliseeya about Bluepoint Restaurant and Martini Bar

Located in the Destin Commons, Bluepoint has a great lunch and dinner menu with fabulous atmosphere. There are tables outside which are perfect when the weather is gorgeous. The interior atmosphere is very unique and spacious, making it a great place to eat with large groups. The food is very good, and they offer a wide variety of dishes.

Bluepoint is also a popular bar/nightspot in the Destin area. They have live music, great drink specials, and a lively crowd.

Kayaking

by Aliseeya

There are several places to rent kayaks in Destin. The Kayak Experience is located right on the Destin Harbor (on Hwy 98) and offers kayak rental and sales. Kayaking is a fun activity and a great workout!

The Emerald Coast

by spartan

Usually when I go to the Panhandle of Florida, I always make a point to visit Destin. The water is crystal clear, the sand is so white that it looks like snow, the restaurants are fantastic and the shopping goes on for miles. If you venture to the Panhandle area of Florida, please make sure you stop in Destin. You'll enjoy your time there!
