snorkeling/glass bottom boats?

by Luvthebeach

My family is vacationing in Destin in August. The children have never been there. Could you recommend a beginning snorkeling adventure for a family who has never tried it? Where is the best place to go, etc.? Hear about the jettys is that a good place? What about crab island? Where is that? Also we have heard about the glass bottom boats/ dolphin cruises. Which ones are good? Can you see much thru the bottom of the boat? Or are the regular dolphin cruises just as good/better? We are late 30's daughter is 17, son is 12. Looking for something to do besides the same old waterparks and mini-golf. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks for all your help!

Me and my wife went to Destin last year. I had never went to the beach before and was planning on snorkeling and crabbing. We stayed at Jetty east condos. The Beach at Jetty east was great. A short time into snorkeling i realizes there was nothing to look at. Someone told me to try the Jetty's so i walked there, about 15 min walk. It was great, hermit crabs everywhere, colorful fish, big blue crabs on occasion, gobies ect. After walking around in the water fish come up to you, break up some bread underwater and they will swarm everywhere! Make sure to go to the jettys in the canal, they are best. Along the beach at Jetty east you can scoop up huge blue crabs at night, alot of peaople do it. Spot them with a flashlight, wade out quickly and scoop them up with any scoopnet, i cooked and ate a bunch.

Thanks for your answer and suggestions. When my husband and I were there before we went to some jettys but I'm not sure which ones they were. They were in a park, I believe in Panama City area as well as I remember. Could you tell me how to find the jettys you are talking about - the ones in the canal. We are staying in Destin at the Pelican Beach Condos.

Travel Tips for Destin

Secluded Bay Beach

by Aliseeya

I love to sunbathe and I prefer calm, tranquil waters to violent ocean waves. Therefore, my favorite place to lay out is on Holiday Isle, on the Bay side. There are no hotels on this beach, making it less crowded. While many boats will anchor on it's shore, it still remains a very secluded spot even at the height of tourist season.

I like it mainly because it's free of tourists, but the water is also beautiful. Its very calm, making it perfect for a quick dip on order to cool off. The water is usually crystal clear and you can see fish swimming all around you.

This beach is located on Holiday Isle, on the bay side near the small jetty. If you want specific directions, just email me!

Awesome new rstaurant we found!

by miamid305 about Sand bar and grill

Sand bar and grill/Islander club is a new restaurant in destin.Located on gulf shore drive across the street from target was a wonderful and enlightening place to eat.It was very family oriented and the staff was wonderful.Great attention to detail as the server kept thechildren laughing constantly. They offer 99 cent margaritas everyday as well as $1 pabst blue ribbons and their happy hour from 4-6 with 2 for 1 drinks and 25 cent wings were great for your budget especially during these times. Then there was the food. The menu was extensive offering everything from burgers to pasta to seafood all fresh and made to order by there executive chef michael ross who also visited the table regularly to ensure satisfaction.Every Friday and Saturday they offer live music in there club upstairs as well as t.v's upstairs and down to catch the latest sports games. Can't say enough about this establishment and can't wait to go there again. the family recipe sicilian sauce with italian sausage and meatballs was wonderful!
They also offered cook your catch after our great fishing trip with destin angler!

Late night bite to eat

by Aliseeya about Waffle House and Whataburger

Sadly, the majority of fast food restaurants are closed by 11pm, making Whataburger and Waffle House the only 24-hr places to grab some food after a night of partying.

Whataburger is located near the Destin Bridge, near McGuires. Cheap, food, greasy food. I love going there at 4AM; everyone is half drunk and still dressed up for the clubs!

Waffle House has at least 6+ locations in Destin alone, not to mention the ones on Okaloosa Island and Ft. Walton Beach. Cheap, good breakfast food. Quick service. Another good place to chow down at after partying. They only do cash though, no credit or debit cards.

Hurricane Lanes

by Aliseeya

This bowling alley is the best in the Destin area. It has been recently remodeled and has 26 lanes, all equipped with touch-screen scoring systems. On friday and saturday nights they feature live D.J.'s, and they have a Pro shop, Cafe, and a full-liquor bar.

Bowling is a fun family activity, and Hurricane Lanes has a very upbeat atmosphere. In addition, it is much cleaner than most bowling alley's I've been to.
