They (the guides) are good about making sure you notice it all.. but still pay attention, as we saw a lot they didn't point out. One thing the DID point out tho...... wild hogs, hanging out, doing their thing

canoe through the 10,000 Islands and camp on one of the Keys on the Gulf of Mexico I remember paddling through the mangrove island and being surrounded by all sorts of fantastic plants and animals. It was literally like being on safari! Spoonbills, pelicans, egrets flew all around us and mullet fish leaped two or three feet out of the water and into the air! i even saw dolphins from the distance.
waterproof bag with buckles that you can tie/snap around the canoe. lots and lots of little plastic bags to waterproof food/supplies and put garbage in--don't litter! & clean up after yourself! A small cooler is also extremely useful and will keep drinks nice and cooool even under the hot sun. pale, airy long sleeved shirts; long light pants; a wide brimmed hat; surf sandals that cover most of your feet but are good for withstanding water HEAVY DUTY BUG REPELLENT! as in the back woods Off kind of stuff make sure your tent is 'no see um' proof. I bought mine at Wal Mart in Naples and it said it was, but it really wasn't. At sunset I got eaten alive and unwisely sprayed the tent with bug repellent (I'm sure that's going to haunt me healthwise)
You also MUST have a waterproof (laminated) map of the keys--!!! very important !!! a wildlife guide--you'll see so many plants and exotic animals you'll be dying to find out what they are!!!
the florida panther national wildlife refuge is located about 12 miles north of everglades city on CR 29. the refuge is located in the big cypress swamp. they have walking trails were you may sight the rare florida panther. the big cypress swamp has a different ecosystem than the everglades area around everglades city. the gulf coast everglades is a salt water ecosystem and the big cypress swamp is a fresh water ecosystem.
Built and founded in 1906 on Chokoloskee Island by C.S. Ted Smallwood - A pioneer in Collier County. The building served as a store, a post office, and Indian trading Post. Ted remained postmaster until his retirement in 1941. His business was with early settlers and Seminole Indians. Road access came to the island in 1955. The store was placed on the National Register of historic places in 1974. Restoration of the store as a museum was started in 1990 by the Nonprofit.
