Fernandina Beach is located on the far northern tip of Amelia Island. There is a beach community fronting the Atlantic shore which is nice enough. But the real treasure is the historic town centered around the port on the intracoastal side. People of European descent have lived and fought in this area since the mid 1500s and the town claims to have been under the control of eight different flags (Spanish, French, English, American, Confederate etc.) Many of the buildings date from the mid to late 1800s and like I said in the intro, it feels as if you are stepping back in time.

Recounting the days events

After a tough day of plying the seas for their daily food the pelicans gather atop the harbor house at sunset. A little companionship as the day ends. Much like the days of yore when the fishermen probably crowded into the Three Star Saloon after a hard day (or night) on the boats.

MM 716.6 Anchorage

The anchorage opposite the Fernandina Harbor Marina is quite popular, but it is uncomfortable in a NW wind.

Dinghy dockage is $2 + tax/day. Showers are $1.50/person. Garbage is 50 cents a bag.

Weekly rate is $10 + tax without showers, and $20 +tax with showers (up to 3 people) and trash disposal. This is as of Jan 1, 2002.

Monthly is $35 without showers and $60 with. An accident that happened in the anchorage in Dec 2000 - a tug hit and sank a sailboat that was anchored either in or very close to the channel. The boat had no anchor light because they'd been having an electrical problem, and the tug had no lookout like they should have had (and so were judged at fault at least partly). One of the guys on board got out with no injuries. The other was killed.

Birdland in north Florida

There is a nature preserve and wildlife rehab place called "Beaks". They are located about 20 miles south of the Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach area. They have numerous exotic and native species of birds on premises in a totally natural-type setting.

This really isn't a zoo, it's more of a research station. They will take visitors, and they'll be more helpful if you give them a donation, which you'll probably be willing to do when you see the good work they do.

The best way to find your way is to ask the locals, or at your hotel. I do not remember the exact directions. It wasn't any problem to find, though.

If you measured history per square mile, and graded it by the beauty of the natural backdrop, Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach might be able to claim the most spectacular heritage in Florida.
Wide beaches on the east frame the Atlantic Ocean, where shrimp boats prowl among the whitecaps, whales calve in the fall and sea turtles nest in the summer. The Amelia River and a long sweep of salt marshes, looking a bit like mislocated western prairies, act as a moat against the mainland west. Forested dunes anchor the middle, offering haven to birdlife.
