Youth hostels!
by miromi about Youth hostels!
Please patronize the youth hostels in Florida! That keeps them going and helps out other travellers. Like Lonely Planet says, a motel may be cheaper, but motels cater to people with cars and are joyless places to sleep. I am very sad that the downtown youth hostel in Orlando burned down (under some very mysterious circumstances, too--hmmm!).
My favorite hostel was the Everglades Hostel in Florida City, which had an elaborate hippie garden and beautiful airy painted rooms. Even though that part of the Everglades wasn't the most enticing, staying there really made my day.

canoe through the 10,000 Islands and camp on one of the tiny beaches to watch the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico (see my Everglades City section); walk down South Beach in Miami and people watch (the highest concentration of boob and nose jobs in the country outside of California); canoe down the clearwater springs in Central and North Florida; snorkel in the keys; patronize the laid-back hippie Everglades Hostel in Florida City; wander the cobblestone streets of the old town in St Augustine at night; try to go to a rainbow gathering; snorkeling the reefs by the Keys
