Help in planning itinerary
by Juds
Hi there! I know I should be doing my asssignment and research on my trip but this is a last minute decision and I was on the move if not working most of the time so I did not really have much time to plan my itinerary in advance. In fact, I just booked my flight last night and my flight is tomorrow at 10:30 am. So please help...
I'll be flying from Detroit to Fort Lauderdale on June 9 with a return trip on June 23. I am set on going to Orlando on June 12-19. Any suggestions for an itinerary on June 9-12 and June 19-23 in Fort Lauderdale or nearby areas? What are the must sees? I can also use your advice on must sees and must do in Orlando as this is my first time and I will be traveling alone. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks!!

I am going to assume that you are driving. If you can, get a Florida AAA book which will do a good job of listing places to visit. You can decide better when you read the descriptions because I don't know your interests (lighthouses, beaches, museums, national parks???)
From Ft. L drive up 1A along the coast as much as possible to Cape Canaveral. On the way you will go through Palm Beach, and you can stop off at Melbourne or the Canaveral National Seashore. In the town of Titusville, you can visit the Cape and also the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. From here it is a fairly straight shot over to Orlando.
On the way back, drive down I-4 to Tampa, and then on around to Ft. Myers. Take 41 east and you can visit the Everglades at Shark River, and you will end up in Miami which is pretty near Ft. Lauderdale.

Being in Orlando really necessitates a car. Assuming you will get lots of advice on the "attractions" - so I'll skip these. My favorite things around this area are:
-Wekiva Springs State Park: http://www.floridastateparks.org/WekiwaSprings/
-Leu Garden: http://www.leugardens.org/
-and without boring you about how angry I am at what these people are charging now, Kennedy Space Center: http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/
This is further out by the coast.
You can use www.mapquest.com or Google maps for directions.
Keep in mind at this time of year it tends to rain in the afternoon, but not every afternoon - so bring your umbrella. Sometimes there's lightning, but it usually stops after 1/2 hour or so.
Enjoy your trip!

go to the Swap Shop on Sunrise Blvd. It's huge and the deals are amazing. You can find clothes, music, perfume, watches, electronics, incense, shoes, luggage and even a live circus show. Visiting all the great bars and restaurants along the beach. There are hundreds of them. The best bars and dance clubs is along Los Olas Blvd. Gotta love that salsa dancing.
Markham Park
by goingsolo
Markham Park is one of the nicest recreation areas in Fort Lauderdale. In addition to grassy areas and jogging trails, you'll find a shooting range, a model airlplane field and a mountain bike trail. Don't expect too much in the way of uphills though. The park is used often for 5k races, which take place pretty much every weekend from October through May. Several small man made lakes are available for boating and fishing. There is also a separate dog park, although animals are permitted in the other areas as well.
There is a charge for entrance, which is about $3 per vehicle, unless there is a special event.
Nautical Themed Lounge
by cjg1 about Wheelhouse Bar
The Wheelhouse Bar is one of the larger bar/lounges on the boat (big enough to have the Muster Drill here). The theme here is Nautical with lots of seafaring decor, accents and memorabilia. There are several large chairs and couches strewn throughout as well as a sizeable bar area with stools. A stage is on one side of the room for nightly entertainment and dancing. We found ourselves here a few times to relax and have a few drinks. The bar serves the usual, wine, beer, champagne, hard liquor and mixed drinks. This bar has a nice quiet atmosphere (when there is no entertainment scheduled) and we frequently saw people playing cards here.
One night we started talking to an older couple who just happened to come from the same neighborhood in the Bronx as Liz. Anthony actually went to the same grammar school as Liz...what a small world.
MAI KAI -- serving Chinese and...

MAI KAI -- serving Chinese and Polynesian food and featuring a spectacular Polynesian Islander Revue! The Mai Kai complex has been in existence since 1956.
The dancers are real professionals, and you can see authentic folklore from the Hawaiian Islands, Tahiti, Samoa and the Maori of New Zealand. The premises recreate a Polynesian Village, complete with tiki torches, a thatch roof, and a wooden plank bridge entrance.
Between dinner and the performance, you can stroll around Mai Kai's POLYNESIAN GARDENS, complete with statues from South Seas Islands. There is also a gift shop selling Polynesian souvenirs, most notably BLACK PEARLS from Tahiti. Beautiful!! (These pictures of me were taken in the gardens...) PLEASE SEE THE MAIKAI TRAVELOGUE FOR MORE PHOTOS! The cocktails are not to be missed!
