Fort Lauderdale Tip
by hayward68
This memory makes me laugh just thinking about it. I was in the grocery store to pick up a few supplies and decided to get a bottle of wine. I went to the cash register, the cashier was putting the stuff through, she got to the wine and paused,'Do you have any ID?' ID!!!! I asked if she was kidding, she assured me she wasn't. I believe the drinking age is 21 in Florida, and for someone who's in their early 30's you might appreciate why this would be a fondest memory!! LOL! Great for the ego I'll say that!
Sawgrass Recreation Park I...

Sawgrass Recreation Park
I was told that you really shouldn’t take an airboat ride through the Everglades, but I couldn’t resist and went here. And I have to say, the term “Redneck” just stuck in my mind while here, if you go you’ll see what I mean. It was enjoyable except that our guide told us about the sawgrass which could slice your arm off, so keep your arms in, and then he proceeded to drive the boat so that I, on the front corner, kept getting hit by grass. I thought I was going to get sliced to pieces. Especially when it got me across the forehead. The woman behind me was worried about me as well! But we saw an alligator! I tried to take a picture but the darn thing slunk right into the water so you can’t see it in my picture. Oh well, I know I saw it!
Take 595 west to I-75 north then take US 27 north about a mile or two.

Water Taxis

Water Taxi offers transportation and tours in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The Water Taxi makes scheduled pickups and stops at many restaurants, attractions and shopping areas. A Water Taxi tour is also a great way to get acquainted with the area. Group tours, theme parties, sunset cruises and other options are available. You can get an all day ticket for around $5
Pasta, Pasta, Pasta!
by garridogal about Il Mulino
Il Mulino is an Italian Eatery with a Family feel. It has a large menu which consists of mainly Pasta dishes - all served in generous portions. The garlic bread is really tasty and the prices are reasonable. I had Pasta (what else?) with Portobello Mushrooms and Shrimp.
MAPS for foot, bike or bus, you need a map.
by JM_runs
There is a map made by 'Dolph map company'. The map is variously called the Waterway map, Cap'n Jacks canal maps, the Gold Coast Waterway map, etc.
It was produced to show the canals in Fort Lauderdale, but it is by far the best street map of Down Town and the beaches.
NW,NE,SW and SE are clearly shown with the streets that devide them marked in green. Streets are very clear and you can easly see how to get from one place to the next.
Not only are bridges shown, but places where there are NO bridges also. Now that may seem simple, but it's not uncomon for locals to find tourists who are lost becuse they were trying to pass over a non-existant bridge. If your map does not show the water clearly then navigation on land will end at a canal.
If you walk or bike, and backtracking is a pain, then this map is a must!
You can probably get one at the marina or any boat store. (BahaMar marina is on the south end of the beach)
Second best, and with the advantage of being waterproof, is the Rand McNally Fort Lauderdale 'Easy Finder' . It's a plastic covered map that sells for the extrotion of $7. But it is plastic covered and says it wont won't tear.
Note: for all map users. 'South beach park' is not a park, it's a parking lot, with BBQ's on the beach.
For walkers a bus map is also useful.
