Things to do...any suggestions?

by tasmania2000

Hello,

I'll be traveling to Southeast Florida in August and am looking for advice on things to do both touristy and non-touristy. Is there anything you recommend that I wouldn't normally know about or should try?

I've already planned:

Orlando - Theme Parks
Fort Lauderdale - Deep Sea Fishing
Everglades - Airboat Tour

I'll have a car and I don't mind driving.

Thanks a lot!

If you are going to be in the Orlando area, you might also want to plan to spend a day or part of a day at the Kennedy Space Center which is about a 1 hour ride from Orlando. I've been to Orlando many times and finally made it to the Space Center last year. Really enjoyed my visit of the facilities, a couple of IMAX films and actually met an astronaut.

Thank you for your responses!

I was thinking about the Space Center, but was worried it'd be a tourist trap and not worth the admission. If that's not the case, I'll definetly check it out.

I also would really enjoy snorkeling, where exactly is the coral reefs?

The coral reefs are at John Pennecamp State Park in Key Largo, 50 miles or so south of Miami. Key Largo is the northernmost of the dozens of islands that are crossed by the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1). If you have a couple of days, take a leisurely drive all the way to Key West and walk around the Old Town.

On your way back from the Keys, take Card Sound Road instead of U.S. 1 (slightly longer by ten miles or so, rejoins U.S. 1 later) and immediately after you cross the Card Sound Bridge ($1 toll) stop for dinner at Alabama Jack's. It's a hoot.

Travel Tips for Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale Tip

by hayward68

My favourite part of this trip was just getting away to enjoy some sunshine. Especially the day spent at Dania Beach and John U. Lloyd State Recreation Area. It was warm and sunny, we sat on the beach watching and listening to the waves come in, absolutely peaceful.

Naples, Florida is about 2 hours from Lauderdale . . . If you have never been to Naples, here is your chance . . . fun little town . . . Go to the beach and have lunch at the Ritz . . . You won't regret it

Water bus

by arttrekker

If you don't get a rental car or don't want to move it, try the Waterbus. For $5 a day you can get to quite a few shopping, dining and entertainment areas here in Fort Lauderdale.

There are two directions. The short one goes up the New River to Las Olas shopping and Riverfront. The long one goes up the Intercoastal waterway to restaurants and the Galleria Mall. Both trips take you past mansions and yachts and are fun just for the ride. Our guests have spent whole days boating around Fort Lauderdale on the Waterbus and really enjoyed it.

24 hour food on Los Olas

by shohman about The Floridian

The Floridian is another place that has been around forever. On trendy Los Olas BLVD, they have some outdoor seating, and typical diner seating inside. Food is always good. Try to grab one of the sidewalk seats, but if they are full don't worry, there are great characters inside. the omellettes are fantastic

Beach it

by shohman

you can't go here and not spend time at the beach. Right off A1A, and lined with shops, bars, restaurants. The City does a good job of keeping the beach clean. Police always patrol the strip so it is fairly safe at any hour. It is always a fun time.
