early arrival
by nurena
My husband and I will be arriving at FLL at 6:00am to visit a family member at hospital in the broward area. What can we do until a decent visiting hour including breakfast?

by the time you get out of the airport and get your bags and a rental car it will be close to eight. Pick up maps and directions to the hospital, check out the sites you might want to see in FLL ,have a leisure breakfast, read the paper and it will be about nine. Go to the hospital by ten.

I think that there are Walmarts in the area that are open 24 hours a day.

Travel Tips for Fort Lauderdale
People Watching Par Excellence
by kikita
When in Fort Lauderdale, you don't want to miss visiting "Las Olas," a picturesque part of the city that sports superb restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. Whenever I am away from home, I long for the graceful palm trees swaying in a gentle breeze, the subtle kiss of salt that you can feel around you, the jeweled water and the brightest azure skies the world over!
Ice Skating on the Navigator
by cjg1
Ice Skating is available on the cruise ship as well as ice shows. The open skating sessions are open to all and you must wear appropriate clothing (pants). The skating is on the lower level of the ship and out of the way. The ice area is quite large and the ice space is big enough for a good show with plenty of seats. Ice Skates are available
O'Haras
by goingsolo about OHaras
It would be tough to miss OHaras. Just look for the large crowd of people and the sultry sounds of jazz emanating from the live band playing inside. Most places come and go as often as the residents and its hard for a place to stay in business for a long period of time. But OHaras is an institution and another one with a loyal following in a city not known for allegiance. It has been through the ups and downs of the area, including when local ordinances prevented places from staying open late (which, in South Florida, means past 2 a.m.) and Fort Lauderdale saw its crowds thin as folks headed to Miami for late night entertainment and when Las Olas was a daytime excursion where struggling shops closed around dinnertime and there was no such thing as the riverfront. Well, there was a riverfront, but it was visited by nothing but boats.
But Las Olas made a comeback in the 1990s and suddenly became one of the best nightlife areas in Fort Lauderdale. Oharas is now a lounge, restaurant and live music venue. Like most places, it has outdoor seating, which I'd only recommend seasonally. But some nights these are the only spots to be had.

Cute Swings, Mediocre Food
by kenv98223 about Oasis Cafe
Clearly a tourist restaurant, with a visible location, outdoor setting and cute tables set up like lawn swings. But the food quality won't have anyone coming back for repeat visits. Very much lacking in freshness and taste - for example, the lettuce in our salads must have been day-old, with all the brown cut edges showing. My meat was partly burned and partly raw. Overall, a forgettable experience, sad to say.
Shizen
by goingsolo about Shizen
There are so many sushi restaurants in South Florida that it is hard to choose, even for the locals. Shizen is one of my favorites on Las Olas. Its a small place located within walking distance to the Riverside Hotel. Shizen has a great outdoor people watching patio as well as air conditioned indoor seating for those long summer months. There are 5 platform booths in case you want to do the take off your shoes and sit on the floor, or a pillow, alternative.
Shizen is a casual place which serves excellent sushi, sake and plum wine for reasonable prices, a combo that is hard to find along Las Olas. You can't go wrong with anything sushi. There is also an oyster appetizer that is fantastic. And I'd highly recommend the plum wine.
