Transportation from Ft. Lauderdale hotel to port in Miama for 14 people

by sgb945

We're taking our two kids, their spouses and children on a cruise over Spring break. We arrive in Ft. Lauderdale the night before our cruise that goes out of Miama. Transfers for 14 people add up to $784. There has got to be a better way to get to the boat and them back to the airport afterwards. Any suggestions???

then taxi

This could save you hundreds

I went to Kayak.Com and did a search for car rentals between Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) and downtown Miami on March 18th (seemed to be a reasonable guess for "spring break." Found that Avis would permit such a one-way rental with a van. Went to Avis.Com and confirmed that you could do a one-day, one-way rental of a mini-van ("seats 7") for $182 or a passenger van (seats 12) for $288. Both rates include all fees and taxes. If you started early, you could get everyone from FLL to the Miami docks in a few hours, have one person drop off the car in downtown Miami, and then have that person take a cab. Figure a similar price when you get back, and you'll spend a lot less than $784 even counting gas and tolls.

If you don't want to drive between FLL and downtown Miami, forget this idea.

This link has several options
www.fort-lauderdale-to-miami.com/Transportation%20In%20Fort%20Lauderdale.htm

and their advice is: "Fort Lauderdale public transit system is at best minimalist if you are seriously thinking of transferring from FLL to MIA allow 3-4 hours to be safe. All the Amtrak rail stations are a[sic] at least a mile from the points they serve, and not in the safest of areas the same can be said for the main bus station. If you are flying in to FLL and taking a cruise out of Miami A[sic] shuttle is your best bet. If your staying in Ft Lauderdale and can rent a car this would be my choice"

Use Dollar Rental, book two vans on one-way rental to Miami Port and same for return.

Travel Tips for Fort Lauderdale

The Cruise Compass(Navigator of the Seas)

by cjg1

The Cruise Compass is the daily "paper" of the cruise ship. The Cruise Compass is put in your stateroom each night for the next day's schedule. The Cruise Compass lists the ports, activities, meetings, events, drink of the day, dining schedule and other important information that passengers need.

Las Olas

by arttrekker

The Las Olas area is a great shopping spot. Take the New River Water Bus and get off at Las Olas, walk out to street and turn left. Walking west on Las Olas to the Riverfront hotel and turn and head back in the other direction to bridge. If you continue over the bridge there are also terrific shops and restaurants.

This is a great place to people watch and to look in galleries. Seldon Seen Gallery on the North side of Las Olas is a guest favorite fill with arts and crafts.

Be sure to check with your hotel or the newspaper to see if one of the three annual Las Olas Art Fairs are going on. It is really crowded there then and in my opinion not as enjoyable.

Taxis

by ak47uk

Taxis are expensive in Florida, soon as you get in the taxi it cost you $1.25 and it works out at around $2 to $3 a mile, and as some of the places that you want to visit could be at least 5 to 6 miles away it leaves a hole in your pocket. There are also limo's that you can hire but they are twice as much and more.

Crazy for Crepes?

by kikita about Sage French Cafe

The Sage French Cafe is a small jewel that you can find in Fort Lauderdale, heading North from Sunrise Blvd. on US 1. If you like French country cuisine and are wild about crepes, this is the place for you! Aside from the great food, you'll love the charming decor...a retro, shabby chic ambiance. I have always gone for lunch, as it is the perfect place to meet a friend and relax from the hustle and bustle of a busy work day over a glass of Chardonnay. Absolutely one of my favorite Fort Lauderdale restaurants!
Note: The entrees are pretty pricey for lunch, but they keep the same prices for dinner, so it is very reasonable for dinner. Gentlemen, take your wives or girlfriends! I guarantee they will love this cozy and romantic spot. I like the seafood crepe best...it is laden with delicious shrimp, sweet scallops, and it actually covers your entire plate! Bon appetit!

Special Note: Visit Sage's web page at http://www.sagecafe.net/home.htm and print a "two for one" coupon! Just now, as I checked on the exact address to share via this page, I discovered they have this great offer!

The beach ofcourse...

by musbars

The beaches with tiny white sand are calling us. Located right on main road A1A. You can seet for hours in serenity watching the gentle waves, big cruise ships, little sail boats, and feel the ocean breeze.
More restaurants than you can find the time to eat at.
