by fredIII
hello everyone , i spent quite a bit of time in fort myers as a kid as my grandparents lived there , BUT its been 20 years since visiting. now i have my own kids and thought it was time to show them what an amazing place it is. I am wondering if anyone can tell me where the best shelling areas are in the area, as i dont remeber as a kid, my two boys are really showing an intersest in shells and actually seeing them in the water, we will be there throughout the the christmas holidays. so any help would be muchly appreciated. thanks fred

Sanibel Island on the gulf side is only a few miles long. As I recall and its been about five years, there are a number of public acess areas to get to the beach. As I understand it in Florida there muust be sufficent acess to the beaches by the people.
I hope that this helps. Enjoy yourself!

For shelling, Sanibel Island and Captiva are unrivaled.
Each is easy to get to. Try Bowman's Beach on Sanibel. I used to live there and in fact was engaged there.

Sanibel and Captiva are easy to get to by car, of course in the season (Jan-April) you can walk faster than driving a car.
There are several out islands only accessible by water, like upper Captva, of course no vacation to the Fort Myers area is complete without a trip to Cabbage Key, this is the island Jimmy Buffet wrote the song "Cheeseburger in Paridise" about. You just need to get in a boat, have lunch on Cabbage Key, and go shelling on the isolated islands in the area.
Have fun, enjoy your kids, remember being a child again.

For some good shelling, I suggest going out to Lover's Key National Park... If you go to Ft. Myers beach from Bonita Beach Rd., it's a good distance down, on the left... They just re-did alot of that area by pumping sand. My dad told me this when my boyfriend was visiting so we checked it and came home with 2 full gallon sized baggies of shells. Good Luck. Also keep in mind Captiva Island... I'm sure they have lots of new shells out there with all the hurricanes blowing in.

Another View of the Banyan

I was only in Fort Myers for an afternoon, so I didn't really have a chance to explore the rest of the city. There is a museum on the grounds of the estate that has several exhibits about Edison's numerous inventions, particularly about his attempts to derive an efficient method of producing synthetic rubber from the goldenrod weed.
Ft Myers/Sanibel Island

"A great place to get some Sun!"
I have stayed in the Ft Myers/Sanibel Island area on three trips to Florida and still find new things to do in the area. I enjoy returing to Ding Darling wildlife area on Sanibel, Lovers Key State Park, Ft Myers Beach, Sanibel Pier and lighthouse area and visited Edison's museum for the first time. I stayed on Pine Island on this trip and it is less developed area. If you travel in the area much be ready to pay causeway fees, since it seemed thay all had a fee to go both ways ($1 for some each way and $6 one way for Sanibel Island). Lover's Key has a fee, a dollar where I walk and $5 dollars for the beach area. You also need to pay parking fees every where on Sanibel Island. If you love the beach, it is better to stay right on the beach some where and bike or walk around the Sanibel Island. A new causeway is being build to the Island.
