We would like to go Fort Myers Beach the 1st. week in May, to go fishing, tarpon snook, reds, but now we are hearing that the water is brown, and muddy,as is the sand, is this true for this time of year? or all the time. doesn't sound very pretty.please help, what is a better place to go ????
Well sometimes the water is merky but it wont by if you go fishing offshore it won't matter.
I will say though do you have your heart set on going to there or you would you consider great fishing and times to be had by a family can be had at South Padre Island, Tex. Some of the best fishing you could have and resonable prices as well. Hotels on the Island may not be cheap but you can certainly stay off the island for alot cheaper. Hope it helps.
Water conditions depend on the weather more than anything. Sometimes the water is brown and murky and at other times, I've seen it a brilliant turquoise. There are many beaches along the Lee Island Coast line. Some are brown and others are sugar white. If you don't like one, go to another one.
Fishing. A great place to go is Lee County. If you want the big groupers, you'll normally have to go about 2 hours off coast to get in 100 feet of water to pull up the big fish, but you can find snook and reds right along the shore. Tarpon, I'd suggest you go to the area between Boca Grande (Gasparilla Island) and Cayo Costa Island for the best fishing area for tarpon.

There are 3 or 4 pages on Lovers Key on VT that will give you an idea on the area and places to stay, also. It's not the same after Hurricane Charley came thru, but it is worth going to see. The beach has been renourished after the storm in August and is rather wide, but it's just not the same like it used to be. Shelling is very good there and the birding is fair there.
The Edison House is now owned by the city of Ft. Myers, and they do an excellent job of keeping it well maintained. It's located right next door to the summer house of Henry Ford, who was a close friend of Edison's, and the two homes are really part of the same "complex". The real attraction however is not so much the houses themselves as the luxuriant gardens which surround them.
