As I have mentioned, when I lived there the whole area was breathtakingly beautiful. Now many areas face the huge challenge
of rebuilding from the devastation of Hurrican Charley. It is one of the downsides of living in "paradise." Sooner or later, a hurricane
DOES hit. Ft Myers/ FM Beach and Sanibel/Captiva/Pine Islands had not seen a major one since 1960. It will take a while, but the area will be rebuilt to it's original
splendor over time. I would say that this bears keeping in mind if you visit in the coming months. It will take a long time to resemble the area that I knew and loved again, but the people WILL succeed in
making it a wonderful place again.

fort myers is located near the gulf coast in southwest florida. fort myers is the county seat of lee county florida. in 1850 the u.s. army built a fort in the area and named it after col. abraham myers. the fort was active during the seminole indian wars and was abandoned in 1858. the fort was re-occupied for a short time by union troops in 1865. the town of fort myers was incorporated in 1886 but did not have a significant population until the florida land boom of the 1920's.

the most notable residents of fort myers were thomas alva edison and henry ford. both of these famous inventors and business men had winter homes in fort myers. thomas edison (1847-1931) invented the phonograph 1877, the light bulb 1879, the kinescope 1891. in all edison owned 1093 U.S. patents. henry ford (1863-1947) was creator of the automobile assembly line and the model T. in the early 20th century the ford motor company was the largest producer of automobiles in the world. the edison estate and the ford winter home are open to the public and are one of the most visited attractions in fort myers.

the fort myers area is home to three beautiful gulf beaches. fort myers beach, sanibel island, and captiva island are a short drive from downtown fort myers. millions of visitors from around the world come to the fort myers area to enjoy these popular beaches.
