Never thought I could miss alligators...
by Canadian_girl
The daughter of snowbirds, I spent the first 10 winters of my life living in Fort Myers. My Canadian friends think I'm insane when I tell them that I learned to walk looking at the ground to avoid stepping on poisonous snakes, fire ants, alligators and the occasional scorpion. Our house was right next to a canal, so we frequently had 10-, 12- or even 14- foot long alligators sunbathing in our backyard. I have to say that it is extremely traumatizing for a 7 year old to watch her father tossing stones at very large gators, and to believe that he will be eaten at any minute... ;-)
Living in Fort Myers was a great experience for me. It introduced me at a very young age to the feeling of being a 'foreigner' (albeit not a very noticeable one), which I'm sure has had an effect on the path I've chosen to take in life.
I still get nostalgic when I smell gardenias (the most lovely flower in the world) or see a brilliant magenta hibiscus. And yes, sometimes the accent still slips through in my speech. I guess you can never really get gator-land out of your blood after all. :-)
