local art league
by auntmargie
Drive down Estero Blvd. right past Red Coconut RV park to the fire station at Donora Blvd. and make a left. The Fort Myers Beach Art League in on the right. It is a wonderful grey and white building which is the studio that houses the artwork of the local artists. Many are members of the Florida Watercolor Society, and they exhibit and sell their art here. During high season starting in October and ending in May, they have juried art exhibits which you can visit and enjoy their works. It is open daily from 10am to 3pm. Classes are also offered for a nominal fee, which are conducted by our talented artists. Enjoy.
Sanibel & Captiva Islands
by AnnS
Just a short drive away are the islands of Sanibel and Captiva. They are both beautiful, with an almost 'tropical' atmosphere. There are wonderful beaches, elegant shops in delightful small complexes and great restaurants. There are also numerous gorgeous homes to admire.
You pass through Sanibel on your way to Captiva, which is the quieter of the two and a perfect place for an evening walk on a beautiful beach.
The islands recently suffered terrible hurricane damage which wiped out a lot of the greenery but they did a great job of cleaning things up and it's still a very beautiful place.
FT MYERS BEACH--MY HOME PORT, FOR NOW
by SHANNONSDADDY
"CURRENT ANCHORAGE 04/99 TO 08/03"
THIS IS WHERE 'CREAGAN AN CRITICH' IS ANCHORED. I'VE LIVED ABOARD HER FOR ABIUT THE LAST 15 YEARS. I MOVED HERE FROM FT MYERS YACHT BASIN IN '99, WHERE I HAD LIVED FOR THE PREVIOUS 9 YRS. THE ANCHORAGE HAS MANY CLOSE CONVENIENCES, BUT THE H2O IS 'DIRTY' FROM RUNOFF. THE MAINLAND IS BOOMING W/EXPANSION, AND THE FERTILIZERS USED BY THE LANDDWELLERS ARE KILLING THE CREATURES AND MANGROVES THAT DEPEND ON IT. AS IS TYPICAL, I GUESS, WITH MOST PLACES, MONEY RULES, AND THE LAND DEVELOPERS HAVE THE MONEY. I'M LEAVING HERE AT YEAR'S END TO SAIL BACK TO THE BAHAMAS, THEN TO THE CARIBBEAN. I DOUBT THAT I WILL RETURN AS THE LAST TRIP OF ONLY 5 MONTHS CREATED GRAVE CULTURE SHOCK WHEN I RETURNED IN MAY. MY PROJECTS NOW ARE OUTFITTING THE BOAT & FINDING A FEMALE SAILMATE, INTEREST SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO ME, snappysailor@msn.com OR 239 823-8866 (LV MSG AS PHONE IS FREQUENTLY OFF).
"MORDECAI, THE SKELETON CREW"
THIS IS MORDECAI, A PLASTIC SKELETON PLACED ON THE BOW RAIL OF MY NEIGHBOR, DAVE'S BOAT. HE, AND HIS MATE, TRISH, HAVE BEEN ANCHORED ABOUT 150' FROM ME FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS. THEY ARE NICE PEOPLE, AND WILL BE MISSED AFTER I SAIL ON.
"WHERE IS FMB???"
FT MYERS BEACH IS TO BE FOUND IN SW FLORIDA BETWEEN TAMPA, TO THE NORTH, AND NAPLES, TO THE SOUTH. THE MAP IS SMALL (I'M SORRY). THE TOWN LIES ON ONE OF THE BARRIER ISLANDS, ESTERO ISLAND, THAT PROTECT THE MAINLAND FROM THE LARGE BODY OF H2O, THE GULF OF MEXICO. THE MAO IS NOT 'NORTH-UP,' RATHER , NORTH IS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PIC.
