Watch for people in the crosswalks.
Be aware of older drivers.
Remember, turn your headlights on if you are using your wipers in the rain.
Please be aware of speed limits, especially around school zones! They can be often much slower than what you have in your home state.
Wonderful Wildlife
by AnnS
I am a great lover of wildlife and the Fort Myers Beach area is a terrific place to see a wide variety of birds and other creatures, up close and in their natural habitat. Wildlife conservation is very important to the area and is rigorously protected.
Water birds are everywhere and you will find yourself sharing the beach with them... especially at sunrise and sunset. There are herons, egrets, sanderlings, dunlins, ibis, pelicans and many more. If you go for a walk in quieter areas, you will also see shyer birds such as woodpeckers, cardinal birds, osprey and roseate spoonbills.
As well as the birds, you can easily find other creatures... alligators, manatees, dolphins, crabs of various kinds, gopher tortoises, squirrels and raccoons (considered pests but I like them). There have recently been sightings of iguanas but I've yet to see one of those.
Turtles come up the beach to lay their eggs in the sand at certain times of the year and there are heavy fines for interfering with them. People in beachfront accommodation are asked to screen lights at night because the turtles use the moon to find their way back to the ocean and lights on the land confuse them. I've never seen a turtle but I've seen their nests.
Wildlife is all around you in Florida but there are also several wildlife preserves in the area of Fort Myers Beach which are easy to drive to and there you will see many different species.

"Fort Myers or Fort Mysery?"
I have a hard time finding something actually good to say about Ft. Myers except for Red Sox spring training. Go Sox! I live about 2 miles from CIty of Palms park. Which is great for 5 weeks during spring training. But for the rest of the year what a bore. There is absolutely nothing going on here, outside of the frequent gunshots I hear every weekend.
And the beach..............ughh. My lease ends in December and it can not come fast enough. I will leave this dump and never, ever look back. My precious Red Sox I will gladly see at any number of other parks in FLA during spring training.

"Like on a postcard..."
Beautiful white beaches, seawater at the same temperature as a hot bath....Just a nice place to get away from the crowded dutch beaches...and relax...
Great for walks during the evening or just sit on the beach looking at the sun slowing disappearing.
