~ Ft. Pierce, Florida ~
"From A1A, US 1, I-95, & the Florida Turnpike"
Fort Pierce is the seat of coastal St. Lucie County. It has a low-slung waterfront downtown with a marina on the Intracoastal Waterway, just across the bridge from the condo towers and beaches of northern Hutchinson Island. We drove through the city once while exploring coastal route A1A south of Vero Beach. After crossing the Intracoastal into Ft. Pierce, we returned north by way of US Route 1.
Just west of Ft. Pierce, the Florida Turnpike, which down to this point angles southeast from Orlando, begins to closely parallel Interstate 95. The two highways then run side-by-side, sometimes within view of each other, as they slide past the suburban boom city of Port St. Lucie and through little Martin County, eventually entering the hustle and bustle of Palm Beach County. I have traveled both highways through this stretch on several occasions while en route to and from South Florida vacation spots.
