# 11 Beal House - 1910
by grandmaR
The brochure picture is of #11 the Beal House built in 1910 which is at 2 Miracle Strip Parkway which is across the street and down in the next block. Pictures of houses on Miracle Strip Parkway were hard to get from the car because of the traffic. This was the home of Dr. J. H. Beal who bought it (along with an adjacent house) in the early 1900s. Dr. Beal used this house as his office and to house his extensive shell collection. He discovered several new species of medicinal plants and was something of a pharmacological expert and a speaker at seminars of pharmacology throughout the country. He also made several land donations to civic and cultural development of the city.
According to the brochure, the building was extensively remodeled as a restaurant in the 1980s so it may not look like this anymore.. The pictures in the brochure are courtesy of David Shea's Photographic Studio

by grandmaR about McGuire's Irish Pub
A kind of a tourist interpretation of a NYC Irish Pub. The whole ceiling and most of the walls have dollar bills stapled to them hanging down like stalactites. There were stuffed animal heads on the walls It was so dark inside that I had to use flash, which I don't ordinarily do. The waiter had an attitude about that.
Their motto is Feasting, Imbibery & Debauchery They are open seven days a week. The photos of the entrance (inside and outside) are numbers 4 and 5.
In addition to a large eating establishment in Destin and one in Pensacola, there is a store selling souveniers and gifts (and they also sell them on line), and a brewery. They also sponsor a running club.
The dollar bills are explained as follows on their website:
"McGuire's Irish Pub first opened in 1977 as a small neighborhood pub in a shopping center. McGuire cooked and tended bar and Molly waited tables and greeted customers. When Molly made her first tip -one dollar- she tacked it to the back bar for good luck. Friends of the pub added to the collection and it soon became tradition. Today you will see over $250,000 one dollar bills hanging from the ceiling throughout the Pub, all of which have been signed by Irishmen of all nationalities. Bob had a huge hamburger (one of over 20 on the menu - photo 2) which was $9.95, and I opted for a shepard's pie for $15.95 (photo 3) and we both drank root beer which they make on the premises. We also got a loaf of dark bread. Total after taxes and before tip was $30.63.
They also have steaks and seafood.
Stick your toes in the soft white beautiful sand!

I don't care what type of weather is going on! You must venture down to the beach and just take in the beautiful white sand. I had never seen white sand before. It was rainy and gloomy the whole time I was there, but I made a point to see the beach in what daylight there was and at night. Just beautiful!
Gateway to the Emerald Coast

The government established the sprawling Eglin Air Force base near Fort Walton in 1930. In 1940 Fort Walton had around 90 residents. After World War II the Eglin facility grew into a major U.S. Army Air Corps training base. After the war Fort Walton became "popular", and added "Beach" to its name. Today Fort Walton Beach relies heavily on tourism and the U.S. Air Force for its year round living. The area is graced by beautiful salt marshes, rolling dunes and alligator traffic. Many of the dunes have been missed by overzealous developers and left in their natural state.
Enter a time warp where life is easy and the charm of the Old South greets you at every location. Relax and enjoy yourself in the Central Time zone where the pace is slower and the beaches uncrowded. Miles of white sandy beaches, bays, bayous and the Gulf of Mexico await you. A subtropical climate with mild southern winds and very little extreme weather make Fort Walton Beach perfect in any season.
Spring brings warm days and clear nights with temperatures averaging 79 degrees. Summer a very popular time with temperatures averaging 91 degrees and a gulf breeze blowing. Fall (Indian Summer) and the waters are a warm 79 degrees, still great for swimming. Winter days are clear and mild with accommodations half the summer rate. Any season is the perfect time to visit the place listed as one of the best beaches in the nation.
