hollywood florida
"the other hollywood"
hollywood is a beach town located between fort lauderdale and miami in south broward county florida. the town of hollywood was founded in 1925 during the 1920's florida land boom. the area around hollywood was originally a mangrove swamp that was dredged in the 1920's. north and south lakes in central hollywood were created to provide fill for creation of the town. hollywood grew rapidly during the 1950's and 1960's as a northern retirement town. today hollywood has a large winter canadian population. hollywood is less crowded and more laid back than it's more famous neighbors, ft. lauderdale and miami.
of interest to the tourist is it's 5 mile atlantic beach and boardwalk. just off johnson street on hollywood beach there are a number of ocean front beach stores, restaurants, bars, and hotels. hollywood beach is not as upscale as fort lauderdale or miami beach and is not as expensive. just north of hollywood beach is the john lloyd beach state park which is an oasis in the middle of the urban sprawl of southeast florida. downtown hollywood also has a very nice shopping and entertainment district. for those on a budget or want a less hectic south florida vacation hollywood is worth checking out.
