Hostels

by myrtle

Does anyone know if there are any youth hostels in Florida's Gulf Coast area? I'm thinking specifically in the panhandle like in either Destin, Panama City, Pensacola, etc. areas. Just curious. I'd like to go with a friend, but I know all the really nice hotels are too expensive for us young people.

Hi again! This is the most comprehensive hostel site I know of: www.hostelz.com

There are no hostels listed in any of the Panhandle towns. If you want to stay at a hostel, why don't you consider going somewhere else? Looks like there are some nice hostels further south and on the east coast. You could try camping too. It's actually fun (at least I think so) and there are several nice state parks along the panhandle coast. I've camped at Grayton Beach and St. Joseph's Peninsula state parks, and both were nice. Check out this website for more info: www.floridastateparks.org

If you don't want to stay somewhere else and you don't want to camp, Panama City Beach is really not all that expensive. There are tons of dive motels/hotels, and I'm sure you could get something relatively cheap. Hope you have fun!

Hi Melissa, youth hostels are just fine. They provide you not only with affordable rates but companionship of other young people; but YH are not your only choice. If you are willing to put up with us old folks, and young couples with babies, moderately priced hotles can be affordable to a group. Think splitting the bill between four of you for a $60.00 hotel room. Around $18.00 a day? That is not much more than a hostel.
Look for large well known chains such as Motel6, Red Roof inn, Homestead suites, Extended Stay, Wellesley inn, etc.
Also locations near the airport tend to be cheaper.
If you are driving interstate roads, look for discount coupon magazines handed out free at fuel and truck stops. They usually advertise very low prices with the advertised coupon on the magazine.
I laso agree with the previous post. Camping is a lot of fun and affordable.
Be frugal, as much as you can, but never compromise your safety. Safety first.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the help, guys. I was just concerned about the cost of the hotels because the cheapest ones I found online were like $150/night, but I suppose there are probably some a lot cheaper that don't advertise online. I appreciate the advice.

I think Destin might be more expensive, but I've stayed in Panama City tons of times (granted, it's been a few years) and I've never paid anything close to $150. There are hundreds of hotels...of course, you might not want to stay in some of them :)

As mermh mentioned, there are hundreds of hotels in the places you mentioned, (and in the little towns in between which might be worth checking out), and plenty of them are inexpensive, though some are real dives (especially around Panama City Beach). There is a hostel in Clearwater Beach if you end up down there some other time.
