Island Bungalows

I stayed here on my last trip to the Keys and it was just what I had in mind for a perfectly relaxing weekend. There are a total of 22 units (though it seems much smaller and is very cozy) in five villa-like buildings and bayfront cottages. I had a great view of the sunset from my 2nd floor window. It’s even better to hang out in one of the hammocks on their little beach which incidentally, is right outside the bungalow doors.

Unique Quality: Kayaks are available and there’s also a big beachside barbecue pit for those who just want to stay on property. I never even ventured to the pool but it looked charming and is shaded by lush, tropical foliage.

The managers (Gretchen and Jim) are super friendly and helpful and chock full of the kind of information only locals can provide.

I liked La Jolla because it lacks pretention and isn’t fussy, which is how I regard the Keys in general. Everyone is very environmentally-minded and the vibe is relaxed and convivial.

I’ll stay here again (especially since repeat visitors get a discount!).

Rates run as low as $89 and as high as $299 per night, depending on the room and the season.

A Great Small Resort

At Mile Marker 82.2 on US 1, about 1.5 hours from the Miami International Airport there is La Jolla Resort, a small informal and relaxing facility for families and fishermen. The small apartments are in five villa-like buildings and a deluxe cottage, for a total of 22 units. All have fully equipped kitchens, cable TV and daily maid service. They have refrigerators, toasters and coffeemakers. The rooms are clean with nice full size showers and a dining table for eating or playing games. But you most likely wont be spending a lot of time inside.

One can lie in a hammock by the bay or watch the beautiful sunsets. Paddle a kayak to lunch at a bay-front restaurant, or use one of the facility bicycles and follow the bike path through the Village of Islamorado. While tanning or resting by the bay, one can watch their children swim in the bay, jump off the pier into the clean and clear saltwater or spend the afternoon trying to catch some fish. There is a large barbecue pit to cook your catch, or if you got skunked, some hot dogs or hamburgers from the store a few blocks up from the resort. If the saltwater activities are not your cup of tea then there is a shallow water fresh water pool available for swimming.
