Star of the Sea: A Hidden Gem

What a mixed bag! Gorgeous grounds and the roar of traffic from the Overseas Highway. But after a day or two, you hardly notice it because you're too taken with the beauty outside your room. You are 77 miles from Key West and in the middle of some of the best fishing in the world. Boat rental and restaurant are across the road.

Unique Quality: A brand-new pool and hot-tub sit next to a crumbling salt-water tidal pool, a relic from the 1950's. Use the new pool, since herons will be fishing in the old one.

Enjoy trhe hammocks, regulation shuffleboard courts, volleyball court and pier. There is what appears to be a beach, but you won't want to swim (or sun) there. It also doubles as a boat ramp. But you'll find lounge chairs across the palm-studded property and a friendly staff.

Sixteen rooms, from basic motel (small fridge), to efficiency (full kitchen), to penthouse (exposed to highway noise). Rooms are tiled floor, concrete block walls and wooden beamed ceilings. All have A/C, cable and telephone. No heat for cold nights.

Helpfulness

There is a variety of places...

There is a variety of places to stay but the Keys as a rule are an expensive place for accomodation. I was lucky to have a brother with an apartment there that he let us use for a few days.

Unique Quality: Tucked off the main road, it was a quiet getaway with a great backyard to enjoy the tradewinds as they blew through the palm trees.
