relaxing stay on islamorada

My family stayed at the Pines & Palms in December 2006 after contacting the local chamber of commerce and getting a "feel" for the place from the person at the front desk who answered the phone. Since we were totally unfamiliar re/ where to eat, who to call re/ fishing, snorkeling, etc., they emailed me a personalized listing (2 pages) of their favorite local establishments- not only did this save much time, but their recommendations were "on the money"- this was much better than the standard listing you often get from the national hotel chains they have on file. We stayed in a new, 2 floor condo that comfortably sleeps 4 upstairs plus a pull-out couch downstairs- extremely happy with the accomodations. We even ate breakfast at Cheeca Lodge to get a feel for this location as we checked into it as well- we prefered the Pines & Palms for its quant feel. Did I mention that, for the fisherman in your family, you can fish from your balcony at high tide? All along Islamorada, many restaurants will cook your "catch of the day"- gives your kids instant gratification. If we were to visit the Florida Keys again, this is were we'd stay.

Run, don't walk away !

We stayed here for one memorable night in January, 2007, and would never return. The room was crawling in bedbugs as soon as the lights went out. And the manager, a guy named Larry, was arrogant and sarcastic,..no apology, no excuses, no attempt to correct the situation, - although he could see the squashed bugs on the floor. The girl at the reception desk was rude as well,..we left when they refused to change our room, but she told us we'd still be liable for the 3 days we didn't use. Good thing we hadn't booked well in advance, as we were able to reject their $250/night x 4 nights charge to our credit card, which came through 2 weeks later. Bedbugs, hard, lumpy mattresses, surly, arogant manager, front desk people, ( just pay up and don't complain attitude ). Wow,..I mean Islamorada is a nice place, but certainly not so nice as to put up with this place. Luckily enough, the Hampton Inn next door had a vacancy,..a much better experience.

Unique Quality: The aloof, unsympathetic behavior of the manager/front desk employees was indeed unique in all my previous travels.

Non tropical resort with an attitude

The worst vacation we ever had, The owners were rude and the lodging was poor. No kids amenities and we had no sleep for both nights we were there. The a/c unit kicks-on every 20 minutes and is louder than a diesel truck. Fold-out couch-bed was the only resort to get away from the A/C unit, only problem was the springs were sticking through the mattress of the fold-out couch-bed. Needless to say with all the attitude and zero compensation of any sort along with the parking problems and insults by the maintenance guy, we went to another place.

Unique Quality: Nothing good about this place , the only thing unique about Pines and Palms is that the owners make you pay in full before you get the keys to your room. If you miss the small print on their website you'll be out a few hundred bucks easy without a refund, why? becuase you're supposed to cancell 14 days prior to your visit.

Pines & Palms, perfect 1st time to the keys

by TripAdvisor Member DawnRN66

We were there from Aug.4-9th. We went with family who are very familiar with the keys. The rooms were very functional and very clean. It was great to have the pool and docks so close and we took advantage of the pool side grill area. We hope to make this an annual event. Never actually snorkled off the piers/docks, didn't look like a good idea but great boating, fishing and snorkling near by.

Loved it!

We just spent the weekend at Pines and Palms and loved it. The grounds and rooms were well kept, very clean and neat. It was convenient to good restaurants and entertainment. Beautiful beach area and pool with bbq area, fantastic ocean views. A great place for a getaway, we'll be back!

Horrible!!!

by TripAdvisor Member ufg8r85

THis place was the pits, front desk was rude and lazy. Room A/C was loud don't even think about trying to sleep underneath it. THen were the bugs termites? Everytime we went to use a bath towel we had to shake out the bugs! THe floor was filthy too!. Would have been a great place if I was in college with all my buddies, but for a family and the rates they charge NEVER again!!! Boat ramp wa snearly impossible too. THe pool was the nicest part of this property.

Five Star Mom & Pop

by A TripAdvisor Member

If you want to experience a true taste of the Key's this is the place to go. We are well traveled and are use to staying at 5 star resort's. We wanted a different flavor but the same quality. Some friends of ours told us about Pines And Palms. It was everything I expected and much more. The staff were very accommodating and friendly, they really went out of their way to make sure you have a great vacation. They even helped arrange our scuba and fishing adventures and turned us on to some of the best local spots for dining! The housekeeping were impeccable, and trust me I am a tall order in this department!
I would rate Pines And Plams a 4 1/2 star Mom & Pop only because at low tide (which they warn you) you have to go just down the road to put your boat in, but if you time it right with high tide there is no problem,( they even give you a tide chart) you just can't beat it, the boat slips are complimentary! So at high tide I would give them a strong rating of a 5 star Mom & Pop.
I loved the a/c units to me it gave the place a true keysie flavor, if you don't like the A/C units I suggest you stay at a chain hotel. We will definitely be back :)
Thanks for a great vacation!

A great old-style Keys place!!

by TripAdvisor Member dbt94gt

There's a little bit of truth in all the reviews about Pines and Palms, except the really negative ones! The place is just like the Keys were 30-40 years ago. Which means it does not cater to cruise boat types or kids who have to be entertained constantly. It is quiet, has a very friendly staff, very noisy (but icy cold) AC units in the bedrooms, great pool area, nice docks, lousy boat ramp (but close to good ones), nice man-made beach (like all beaches in the Keys), lots of beautiful palms and close to many great restaurants!! And, yes, they have a few tiny sugar ants, just like all of south Florida! The oceanview suites are priced very reasonably and have a great view of the ocean through the palms and over the roofs of the small cottages that are closer to the beach. The suites are spacious and having the kitchen is very convenient! I've stayed just about everywhere in the Keys over the years and this is one of the very best. If you want to really be on the ocean, then spend the extra $$ and rent a cottage on the ocean. If you want a really laid back, relaxing place to stay, this is it!!

a great place to stop off and have a great time..

by TripAdvisor Member chefbobmv

We just cam off a 10 days cruise and had to see the keys. We stayed two days in key west and three days at pines and palms resort. This place was so quiet at the pool and rooms were very nice. Very nice people to talk to and eating was no problem. Lots of places to eat and they will tell you at the offices were to go,if you ask. Try it and you will have a great time.

Tiny, rustic huts in a shabby, over-priced resort

by TripAdvisor Member Anne2004

We booked the Palms and Pines for a recent 4-night family stay on the basis of the resort's website (misleading) and the positive reviews here on Tripadvisor. Having returned from our stay, I can only conclude that these positive reviews were written by inexperienced travellers who do not have high standards and are easily pleased! Our euphemistically titled "Two-bedroomed cottage" was more like a tiny, 3-room shack with one tiny, tiny antiquated shower/toilet opening directly off the main eating area (not very hygienic) shared between 4 people, ancient A/C units (as many have noted) and the absolute bare minimum of kitchen equipment. The pool is clean, but is small, and the grounds were not particularly clean or well-kept. The whole place has an air of shabbiness, despite the fake painted shutters on the "cottages". In fact, I agree with another reviewer that the Keys have in general this shabbiness and slight seediness. However, the great sunsets, seafood, sunshine & marine life make up for this; you just have to choose your resort carefully, and Palms and Pines certainly isn't the right resort, and certainly not at over 200 dollars/night for a tiny shack! Keep looking!!
