An orientation to the Jacksonville Metro Area
by noidiotsplease
The Greater Jacksonville Metropolitan Area covers four counties in the northeastern corner of Florida. As this destination is very rich in its tourism offerings I have split my coverage of metro Jax into three separate destination pages as follows:
JACKSONVILLE
includes the communities of atlantic beach, jacksonville, jacksonville beach, neptune beach, orange park and ponte vedra beach
AMELIA ISLAND (45 minutes north of downtown)
includes the communities of amelia island and fernandina beach
SAINT AUGUSTINE (45 minutes south of downtown)
includes the communities of crescent beach, saint augustine, saint augustine beach, vilano beach and world golf village
Be sure to visit all three pages and their accompanying tips to get the full story on what to see and do when visiting the Jacksonville area.

Jacksonville, Florida

"Jacksonville, Florida"
Jacksonville is a very widely spread-out city, home to over a million people, with miles of long white beaches, completely riddled with waterways, the largest being the St. Johns River. The city boasts a large NFL Stadium - home of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. The cost of living is still pretty reasonable and there is a huge real estate boom in progress, has been for awhile, and not wavering by any means. Jacksonville is also a very grown up Naval town, housing a couple of the US' Naval Bases. The Summers are very hot and humid, Spring and Fall are the most comfortable and beautiful times of the year here, and winters can be pretty chilly, but not what any Northener would call "Cold" - we do not "normally" see snow nor ice, though I believe it was December 1989 that Jacksonville's transportation and operations shut down for a few days because of ice and snow... We are 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive from Orlando, Florida; 1 hour to Daytona Beach; 30 munutes to St. Augustine; approx. 4-5 hours drive from Tampa; and 6 hours to Ft Lauderdale/Miami by car....
