Jacksonville FL question, please answer asap!!!
by CruisePva
I will be in Jacksonville the weekend of June 19 and I desparately need some help on choosing my hotel. I have it narrowed down to the Sea Turtle on Atlantic Beach, or the Amelia Hotel & Suites on Amelia Island.
I want a nice, clean place that isn't really crowded but has *something* to do nearby. My 2 sons will be traveling with me, and we want to stay someplace safe. Any recommendations would be appreciated!!! Thanks in advance. :)

Stay at the Sea Turtle!
The Sea Turtle (read my tip) is nice and is located on the ocean in Atlantic Beach mere footsteps from the restaurants and shops of Jacksonville's Beach Town Center (read my tip). This is actually our favorite beach and one that I would consider as safe as most any beach provided you exercise common sense. In addition, the other main beaches, the Downtown Riverfront, museums, the zoo, the Talbot Islands, major mall, numerous nature trails and other attractions (read all of my travel tips on Jacksonville) are reachable in less than half an hour's drive. You can also get an oceanfront room with a balcony at the Sea Turtle for that extra special (yet a little pricier) beach experience.
The Amelia Inn is located in Fernandina Beach at the northern tip of Amelia Island, about 45 minutes north of Jacksonville and its main beaches. Fernandina has a quaint red brick and Victorian historic district with shops and restaurants and a great Civil War fort. Fernandina is a charming place to spend a few hours or to simply get away from it all, but its sleepiness and comparative remoteness make it a bit of an inconvevience if you're planning to hit all the highlights of Jacksonville. Also, the Amelia Hotel & Suites is located across a somewhat busy road from the beach and is not actually on the ocean.

Stay at the Sea Turtle!
It is located on the ocean in Atlantic Beach, mere footsteps from the shops and restaurants of Jacksonville's Beach Town Center. This is our favorite beach and one that I would consider as safe as any other beach providing you use common sense. The hotel itself is quite nice and is even a favorite of author John Grisham. For a little extra expense you can get a room with an oceanfront balcony. Location-wise, Jacksonville's other main beaches, Downtown Riverfront, zoo, museums, major malls, Talbot Island parks, the ferry, numerous nature trails and other attractions are located in a half an hour's drive or less.
The Amelia Hotel & Suites is located in sleepy Fernandina Beach, on the northern tip of Amelia Island about 45 minutes north of Jacksonville and its main beaches. Fernandina has a charming Historic District with shops, restaurants and a great Civil War fort. It makes for a great place to spend a few hours but its comparative remoteness makes it a bit inconvenient as a home base for hitting the high points of Jacksonville. Plus, the Amelia Hotel itself is across a somewhat busy road from the beach -- not on the beach itself.
I hope you find this helpful. Be sure to read all of my (noidiotsplease) tips on the Sea Turtle, Beach Town Center, Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville's many other must see places, restaurants and other qualities.

Travel Tips for Jacksonville
Southern Fried
by yallpeoples
For those of you who aren't accustomed to folks who make a big fuss about church, you'll see it here. In my experience living in Jax, I notice that people are conservative and are churchgoing. But nobody dragged me into a church. People here talk a little slower, be patient. Don't get freaked out if you see black girls in beehives bigger than their heads. The fascinating part about this is that these women are still able to walk in 4 in heels and carry their babies. How they do it beats me. Yes, there are rednecks here and don't laugh if you hear someone's name is Billy Bob or Bubba. It is for real. Everybody talks about how the South is racist, but I didn't experience it living there. I have lived in so called progressive cities where they have been more prejudiced than the South. Don't let looks deceive you. Sundays there are dead, so have something to do in mind like go to the beach, drive to the Okefenokee Forest in Georgia, go to St. Augustine, but do something or else you will be bored out of your mind. Be prepared to drive a long ways for everything. You'll either love Jax or hate it because the locals felt that way about it. Despite the fact I come from the West Coast where life is so different, I enjoyed Jacksonville and may come back again someday.
kingsley plantation
by doug48
pictured is the cook house at the historic kingsley plantation. in the old days the kitchens of plantation homes were separated from the main house to reduce the risk of fire. the kingsley plantation is a very interesting place to visit on fort george island near jacksonville.
Mixed seafood platter
by Carnation about Dixie Crossroads
.
Another good place to eat is the Dixie Crossroads seafood restaurant just a few miles out of Deland. We had to wait 45 minutes for a table as it is a very popular venue! I chose the mixed platter of crabs and shrimps while Ted chose lobster and steak. We shared each others meals. Well worth a visit!
jacksonville beach

east of downtown jacksonville is it's beautiful atlantic beaches. the main beach is jacksonville beach and there is ponte vedra beach to the south and neptune beach to the north. jacksonville beach offers a number of small beach accesses with free parking. the town of jacksonville beach is a great place to visit when in the jacksonville area. see the attached web site for more information.
Don't move to Jacksonville or Florida
by NorthernSafety
Dont' move to Jacksonville or anywhere else in Florida. There are a combination of too many dangers here: very high humidity, LOTS of crime, LOTS of lightning, etc. When added up, it makes Florida more of a state to endure, rather than enjoy. Visit here for the ONLY two advantages: 5 months of a mild winter, and some world-famous tourist attractions. But don't live here, for your own best interest.
