Jax(springfield or St johns)

by arlenebuster

I've heard that the Springfield area is really changing. I was looking at buying in the St Johns area to buy specifically a little east of Julington Creek. Is moving to the Springfield/Riverside areas better? Travel is not a problem as my husband works from home. That area in St Johns is growing, but I'd like to know a little more about Springfield/Riverside/Avondale areas more. Please help. Also we have kids.

Riverside/Avondale and Springfield are both popular historic areas that have seen a lot of restoration. Riverside/Avondale, just southwest of Downtown, has a lot of nice neighborhoods near the river with trendy restaurants and shops that appeal to young executives and artsy types. Sprinfgfield, while undergoing extensive gentrification, is still part of the city's rough urban hood. In Springfield, one street might have meticulously renovated Victorian homes while the next has drug dealers and hookers. Personally, I would stay away from the areas immediately north (Springfield) and northwest of Downtown, as this is where you will find the largest concentration of crime and poverty in the city. If you're looking for nice historic neighborhoods, then San Marco (south of Downtown) and Riverside/Avondale are MUCH better than Springfield. (I think San Marco is even better than Riverside/Avondale). Since you have kids though, you may really want to consider the city's eastern neighborhoods. Here you will find the best three malls, best parks and natural areas, best movie theaters, lots of middle to upper class neighborhoods and country clubs, abundant water access (St. Johns River, Intracoastal and wetlands) and quick access to very family friendly beaches. Some neighborhood areas to ask about are East Arlington/Ft. Caroline, San Pablo/Intracoastal West, Kernan/Hodges, Deerwood/Tinseltown and Mandarin/San Jose. St. Augustine, FL. Just up the I-95 you'll find the oldest buildings in the United States. St. Augustine was the first permanent U.S. settlement and you can tour the remaining structures that have survived through the years. You can also visit the beautiful St. Augustine Lighthouse in the area.

Contemporary Thai

by Jenniedilly9 about Lemongrass Restaurant

Add a little spice to your life at this Thai bistro with a trendy upscale vibe. Lime green decor surround you in a sophisticated setting. Sit at the stylish bar then head to your table with a shot of lemon grass or plumb wine in hand. Your typical Pad Thai is available as well as several variations of sushi, fish, and chicken dishes. Try the Crab Rangoon appetizer. Crab Rangoon appetizer, Pad Thai....with extra peanut sauce.... burning hot!!

avondale historic district

by doug48

the avondale historic district has scores of architectually significant homes and buildings. the majority of avondale's homes were built during the 1920's florida land boom. when driving around avondale you can see examples of art deco, craftsman, classical revival, mediterranean revival, and praire school architecture. for those interested in achitecture the avondale district is worth visiting when in jacksonville. the avondale district is listed on the national register of historic places.

I lived in Jacksonville for a school year. This is another city that I absolutely adore and would love to end up in. It has the big city feel mixed in with the small town one. The homes are beautiful and there is a pretty good night life.
