Beach question!

by JulesW

I will be visiting Jacksonville next weekend (Sept 13-15), and plan to stay at Hanna Park. I have been trying to get a question answered, but it is proving difficult, and I hope that you can help me.

We will be staying at Hanna Park, and attending the festival at the Sea Walk pavillion, one block north of Beach Blvd at the ocean, on Jax beach. Would it be possible for someone to walk from Hanna Park to the pavillion along the beach? I am having a hard time discerning whether or not this is the same strip of beach-whether it is possible to just walk along the beach in one direction and end up near the Sea Walk pavillion.

Any help you could give me would be grand, or if you could point me in the direction of someone who would be of better assistance, I would much appreciate it!

Thank you very much and we look forward to spending the weekend in Jacksonville!

Sincerely,

Julie Warner

Unfortunatly i think that this is no longer possible, due to hanna park being a nature reserve. It is the same strech of beach but i beleive that its been, blocked. To confirm call hanna park on 904 249 4700. Hope you have fun at the festival

Travel Tips for Jacksonville

Riverplace Tower and its little known dining spots

by noidiotsplease

When it was built in the 1960s, the 27-story Gulf Life Building was the city's tallest. Today, nearly 40 years and two name changes later, Riverplace Tower (also known as the SouthTrust Building) ranks only as the city's fourth tallest , but it does remain the tallest building on the Southbank side of the St. Johns River -- for now.

The University Club, located on the top floor, is an exclusive private restaurant and club where many of Jacksonville's biggest movers and shakers of the past few decades have wined and dined with a bird's eye view of the city. For those of us less privileged, the glass-enclosed Skyline Room, located on the building's second floor, just steps from the Southbank Riverwalk, serves basically as an extra dining hall for the building's cafeteria, but its spectacular view of the Northbank skyline and river make it an inviting place for pedestrians interested in an air-conditioned spot to brown bag it while taking in a great view.

Riverplace Tower's reign as the tallest building south of the river will soon be coming to an end. A variety of residential towers in various stages of planning and construction will be rising on the Southbank over the next couple years. In fact, two of those proposed towers are a strikingly futuristic pair that, when completed, will even rise higher than the Northbank side's 42-story Bank of America Tower (currently Jacksonville's tallest).

Kingsley Plantation

by noidiotsplease

The centerpiece of the Ft. George Island State Historic Site and part of Northeast Florida's Black Heritage Trail, Kingsley Plantation is a historic old plantation house left over from the era of slavery. The grounds include the plantation house itself along with remnants of old coquina slave huts and Indian mounds, as well as scenic marshland vistas.

Kingsley Plantation also serves as a second visitor center for the Timucuan Preserve (see separate tip) which has its main visitor center at Fort Caroline (also see separate tip).

Waterfront views of passing cruise and cargo ships

by noidiotsplease about Sandollar

Located right next door to the St. Johns River Ferry landing on Ft. George Island, the Sandollar is a great addition to Jacksonville's dining scene. Boasting giant picture windows, patrons enjoy views of the river that include the shrimpboats and casino boats docked across the water at Mayport Village, the ferry itself as it makes its regularly scheduled crossings, and the occassional towering ship making its way to/from the port. I have also seen dolphins playing in the river from my table and if you look carefully you can also spy the historic Mayport lighthouse.

Inside, the decor includes aquariums and bubble lamps accented by nautical touches and the atmosphere works for everything from a romantic dinner to a family outing. While I personally am not a seafood lover I can say they have great chicken sandwiches and other landlubber offerings.

Jacksonville's Downtown Water Taxis

by noidiotsplease

While they are a little more expensive than the riding the monorail or bridge walking, Jacksonville's water taxis offer a very relaxing and scenic option for crossing back and forth between the Northbank and Southbank sections of downtown. It's fun to just sit back and admire the glassy towers and river scenery as you cruise.

When catching the water taxi on the Southbank, be sure to catch it at River City Brewing Company. Catching it here provides a longer ride as the taxi makes two more stops along the Southbank before it actually crosses over to the Jacksonville Landing.

Nighttime rides are especially romantic as the skyscrapers and Friendship Fountain are illuminated in an array of colors.

I was stationed at NAS Cecil Field as an avionics tech on S-3A's for two years in the late 80's. I loved the landing so much that I went there again in 1999 when I went to S. Carolina for Thankgiving.
