where to live

by dubioussone

i live in New York and am planning on moving to Jacksonville in december i would like to now where the good areas are, and where i could find pictures

Re: where to live

by JL_StAug

I enjoy living in St. Augustine, which is about 45 minutes south, and commuting to Jacksonville. However, since you're coming from New York, you may be looking for a bit more action than our sleepy town provides. If you can afford it, riverside is nice. Also, Ponte Vedra Beach has a good number of relocated New Yorkers. Some parts of Jacksonville Beach are okay, others are not so good. For the most part, you'll want to stay away from the Northside and Westside of Jax.

You can find some decent pics of the Jacksonville area at http://floridatimesunion.excursia.com/destinations/USA/FL/jacksonville/attractions/

Hey. A great place for Jacksonville information, attractions, history, pics etc is www.BigRedRabbit.com. Just click on Jacksonville Information. I have a question for you since you mentioned moving to Jacksonville from New York. I am curious as to the reason why most people from New York choose to move to Orlando? I am guessing it is because the winters are a little warmer there but not sure. When I used to live in Orlando, the residents referred to it as "little NY". I have just been wondering if everyone in NY gets together and decides they will all move to Orlando ;-) Why are you choosing Jacksonville?

Best of luck to you!

Travel Tips for Jacksonville

Andrew Jackson -- for whom the city is named

by noidiotsplease

This sculpture depicts former President Andrew Jackson as a general on horseback. Jackson was an important figure in the history of Florida, so it makes sense that today the state's largest city, Jacksonville, is named in his honor. Of course, the irony is that Andrew Jackson never set foot in Jacksonville, which during his time was merely a small town named Cowford. Nevertheless, today this likeness of General Jackson seems to salute the landscape of glassy skyscrapers that surrounds him as if proud to see that such a prosperous city bears his name. Look for the statue along Independent Drive, at the northwest entrance to the Jacksonville Landing.

Beach park offers spectacular views of navy ships

by noidiotsplease

Operated by the City of Jacksonville, Huguenot Park is located on Fort George Island and fronts both the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the St. Johns River opposite Mayport N.A.S. Free of development, Huguenot's beach boasts a backdrop of some of the highest dunes in Jacksonville and a chain of rocky jetties that stretch out to sea marking the entrance to the river's busy shipping channel. Visitors should be advised that water activities are better enjoyed at one of Jacksonville's other beaches as, due to Huguenot's location, the shape and size of its sandy stretches can vary drastically with the tides and the strong currents where the St. Johns meets the Atlantic can be too treacherous for swimmers. Beachgoers do, however, get an awesome view of the gigantic military ships (including the aircraft carrier JFK) in port across the river.

Aside from a couple of isolated spots in Amelia Island, where parking on the sand is permitted, Huguenot Park is the only one of Jacksonville's beaches where automobiles are allowed to drive on the sand. For me, that alone makes Huguenot Park less appealling than the city's other beaches; however, many people prefer it for this same reason. Regardless of your opinion, you have to admit that the towering dunes, rocky jetties and skyscraping military ships certainly make Huguenot unique.

Gene's - Good Inexpensive Seafood!

by MatthewMetcalfe about Gene's Seafood (multiple locations)

Gene's is an inexpensive seafood restaurant with an amazing variety of seafood to choose from.

This place is a basic, unpretentious restaurant that focuses on the food. Gene's offers everything from Shrimp and crab to alligator, Frog Legs, and about any fish you can think of.

You can get it Fried, Broiled or Blackened and it's all good. The service is quick and because of the extensive menu and low prices, it's a good place to experiment a little. Fried Alligator and Shrimp Lunch for $6.00. There's More Alligator than Shrimp which was surprising. Served with Fries and your choice of Cole Slaw or Apple Sauce.

Hanna Park: popular beach, biking and surfing spot

by noidiotsplease

Just north of Atlantic Beach and south of Mayport N.A.S., Hanna Park is a beautifully preserved oceanfront park operated by the City of Jacksonville. In addition to its wide, white sand beach with lush green dunes, Hanna Park boasts acres of coastal woodland recreation areas including freshwater lakes (with paddleboat rentals), numerous hiking and biking trails, ample picnic areas, a children's water play area and camping facilities. Locally, the park is famous for its great mountain biking trails and for "The Poles," Jacksonville's storied surfing spot.
