Courtyard Key Largo: Serious Noise Issues
If you take a look at my hotel reviews you will see I am a "go with the flow" traveler. This is my first encounter with some serious noise problems. We are Marriott members and also have a Marriott Credit card - made reservations months ahead of our stay and still were given a room with a view of the parking lot. We were able to see the boats and canal from the side of our balcony. We were just down the hall from the Bistro - the restaurant area. We were advised of cookies and coffee and popcorn starting at 3PM. The cookies were put out but never replaced, never saw the coffee and did have a small bag of popcorn. Coffee was available in the morning. I was not impressed with the coffee. Both mornings there were apples set out in the lobby.
The room is very large and is in good shape - has a flat screen TV and a good size fridge. Plenty of towels, shampoo, conditioner and lotion. Not an abundance of electrical outlets, but this is not a business hotel. The lighting was good and all lights worked.
At 5:30 AM we heard loud scraping sounds coming from outside in the hallway and we heard loud laughing and talking. Finally I walked down to the Bistro area, in my pajamas and asked them to try to be quieter. They were apologetic and the noise ended.
The next night we heard banging doors across the hall - no quiet doors here evidently.
There is a small pool and a good hot tub here - with a beautiful view.
If they give you a room near the Bistro do not accept it - it is way too noisy there with loud talking and kitchen noises. I don't get it why they gave us a room like that. On our second and last morning we heard all the laughing and talking and banging again in the Bistro area. When I went out to the lobby get some coffee, I talked to Anna at the desk. She comped us a breakfast and apologized for our unfortunate accomodations.
Unique Quality: Very nice location on the canal. Easy to get to any of the dive places. There is no charge for parking here and there is a covered parking area.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park: Camping
We made reservations here but didn't end up camping because my parents were also visiting at the time so we stayed in their hotel room (there was a cold spell when we were down and preferred indoor accomodations for the night!). However, we did check out the campsite, which was a bit disappointing. The sites are really close to one another, with no vegetation or privacy inbetween. Plus they are on gravel! Additionally, the campground is not near any water. I would still camp here to save money on accomodations, but not really for the "fun" of camping. The park itself has a lot of things to do and is worth checking out, especially for snorkelling, diving, boating of all sorts.

Stone Ledge: Economical but good value
The Stone Ledge motel is on US1, at the southern end of Key Largo. It consists of rooms and suites, with ample parking. The rooms were clean and comfortable, though, during our visit, some accessories were beginning to show their age. A the back of the motel is a small beach where you can swim from, plus a jetty that was mainly used for fishing. Cross the highway, and you are a short walk from Snappers Bar & Grill, with food and entertainment on the sea. A sort drive or brisk walk back towards Key Largo town is a good breakfast restaurant.
Unique Quality: The motel has pleasant tropical gardens, with a huge tree that in the Uk we would call a rubber plant. It was great to unwind on the beach on the sunloungers provided, with just the wind in the palms and the odd pelican flying past. Sunsets...mmmmmm... though mosquito repellent is a must!

Kawama Yacht Club. Tower Unit...
Kawama Yacht Club. Tower Unit 503. We watched sunsets from our balcony each night.
Unique Quality: I spend weeks searching for just the right place to stay, and my efforts really paid off. This two bedroom condo had absolutely everything you could want or need. The house was full of interesting island pieces. The kitchen was well supplied. The views were fabulous and the owners were very friendly and welcoming. The Kawama Yacht Club is a private, gated community. Besides the lovely accomodations, the club has a beach area, two swimming pools, a children's playground, a private marina, a fishing jetty, and my favorite - a large salt water lake.
