24 hours in the Keys
by timmy1975
I'll be in Miami for about a week this month and am considering a 24 hour jaunt into the keys.
My wife doesn't care for long car rides, so we're looking initially at Key Largo. We're not opposed to driving further than Key Largo, but I wonder if one of the other islands has more character or value. I've heard much about Key West, but no so much about Key Largo and the others. Which Island and places do you think would be best for us considering the following:
We like good local-flavor seafood.
We like natural beaches without high rise hotels & shopping centers.
We'd potentially like a good low budget snorkeling adventure. (Do you have to do the whole boat/guide thing, or is there a good place to rent gear and wade in?)
We do NOT like resorts.
We do NOT like overly corny Jimmy Buffet style party-bead culture.
Thanks for any insight in advance.

get down to Ramrod and snorkle Looe Key or maybe a little further and go out to the reef on the small speedboats out of Bahia Honda State Park. BTW - the Keys don't have beaches except at Bahia Honda and the tacky south part of Key West. From Miami, you might be much better off going to Biscayne National Park. Less car travel..great snorkle opportunity.

I would definitely say Key West is worth it but you need 1 night and 2 full days or go to Key Largo. If you go to Key West I would suggest this
1. Leave relatively early since drive will take 3-4hrs
2. Stop for 2-4hrs at Bahia Honda State Park – very nice beach
3. Get to Key West so you have time to experience the sunset (very nice)
4. Go for a snorkeling trip ½ (to reefs) or 1 day (to dry Tortugas) strongly recommend it!
Option is to okay sandy beach at hang at the Fort Taylor beach which is okay
5 Drive back in late afternoon
Travel Tips for Key Largo
Take a (glassbottom) boot trip...
by mafootje
With all the water surrounding Key Largo you can't just go here without taking a boat trip. We took a trip aboard the Key Largo Princess. But even when weren't looking down through the bottom the trip was great. Sun, water, birds and boats who needs more when on a vacation.

Breakfast with a view
by mafootje
The hotel we stayed in was ok but the surrounding they created was great.
Who doesn't want to have a simple breakfast with this view. I do, after a few years this still brings back nice memories.
This is really getting away from the hectic world i call home, because it was early we had our own private beach.

pack light !!!
by whensvacation
We flew into Key west from our home city were they don't mind to weigh our luggage. Once leaving we found out that our suit case weighed in around 90lb. (and we didn't wear 1/2 of it) after taking out our beach bags and random bags to stuff our junk in to comply with the 50 or 60 lb weight limit we finally were allowed to bored. If there is only 2 of you, take 1 suite case, if you bring more than that, you've over packed. If you travel anytime during the summer you really only need : swim suites, cover-ups,shorts, tank tops, tanning oil, sunscreen, camera and flip flops. Trust me, I live with an over-packer and we will be taking our 3rd trip there and finally he realizes that's all we wear. There's really nothing to dress up for. Nobody does!!!
Good variety menu
by Hoosierustraveler about Snappers
On the ocean side. Dining either inside or out on the 'porch.' Wait staff very professional & attentive. Quite a lot to choose from on menu. Some different/varied treatments offered for fish. Grouper & dolphin excellent!
Pelicans
by tpangelinan
Well you may love pelicans or you may not, if you do then you'll love the huge birds and have fun taking pictures. If you don't then you may find then a bit pesky if you are near a dock when the fishing boats come in and they clean the fish, it like a feeding frenzy of feathers. .
Questions and Answers
Q: 2 full days at Key Largo in mid December, how to best use our time? "My wife and I will be at Key Largo for 3 nights, 2 full days available.
We definitely want to try snorkeling if water is not..."
A: "John Pennekamp is actually in Key Largo while Bahia Honda is quite a bit further south, on the way to Key West - over an hour with good traffic.
Depends on who you talk..."
