Genuine Key West housing

Like most of us on VT, we like to find unique places to stay when on holiday. Surfing the 'net in advance of our trip, I came across the website of Center Court historic properties in Key West. These folks have a large selection of cottages and house in and around the historic center of Key West. The website is highly funtional, offering you an easy opportunity to tour the properties via slideshow, and to view the up-to-date availability for your planned holiday dates.

Basically, you're getting a cottage with Center Court. We chose the Leeward Isle, mostly because of its size, private parking and location. These are generally NOT bed and breakfast accomodations, no morning meal happens. But, they usually have nicely appointed little kitchens, and a dependable daily maid service. And for the most part, you get the desired double with Key West accomodations, at least for us older folks. Great location and yet reasonably quiet, the neighbors and their motorcycles not withstanding.

Some of the cottages have private pools, others have outdoor hot tubs and access to Center-Court owned pools, usually with a few hundred feet of the place. FWIW, an outdoor hot tub in June will be the last thing you'd want to do. You'd probably enjoy that more when the winter cold comes in January. That's a joke. ;)

Unique Quality: The cottage is a historic "shotgun" style dwelling, which I suppose means that it "shoots" out toward the street in a staight line. The lots for all of these type of houses are long, skinny rectangles, with minimum street front presence.

Again, one nice thing for us is that the Leeward Isle cottage had a private, off-road parking lane...and parking can be dicey in Key West. I notice one downtown parking meter that charged 25 cents for FIVE minutes. FIVE minutes. I suppose that's for people who need to stop at a roadside bar long enough to get a daiquiri.

Inside, the cottage was well-cooled via a system of thermostatted room air conditioners, and it also had several nice ceiling fans...essential stuff in south Florida. And if we'd been in the mood to sit on the front porch with our morning or afternoon drinks, it had a nice little porch and some chairs. For me, it was a bit hot in June for such behavior...I preferred nailing my cold beer inside in the den.

Oh, BTW...the address below is for the Center Court's main office. The Leeward Isle Cottage itself is located at 529 Olivia Street.

Solitude a Block from Duval Street

Honeymooners? Secret lovers? Family with kids?

Center Court is our favorite place to stay in Key West. Just a block or so off Duval, the heart of Key West, Center Court offers a dozen apartments, cottages and homes, each tastefully decorated and convenient to everything.

Unique Quality: The main house hosts several apartments and cottages, a communal kitchen, workout shed and pool. But there are also almost a dozen off-site properties ranging from duplexes to full homes, all within walking or biking distance of everything in town. The staff (and the inn's dogs) are there for you every step of the way. No request is too outlandish.

Key West Cottage

Center Court Historic Inns & Cottages are a collection of renovated cottages and small houses dating back to the cigar factories of the late 1800's. The Inn has received several honor and awards and they deserve it! There are rooms of all sizes and price ranges. The grounds are well kept and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the Keys.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom condo called "The Artist House", which features and sells the work of artist William Selesnick. The condo had central air, full kitchen, washer/dryer and a private patio with a jacuzzi.

Unique Quality: The Inn provides gated off-street parking which is a definite plus. The is an elevator from the parking area up to the section where we stayed.

There are 3 pools, but they are spread out over the 3 block area the cottages cover. We were next to the smallest pool (only 4 feet deep), but the pool deck overlooked Duval Street.

The Inn is next to Duval Square, which is the quieter end of Duval St.. It was a short walk to more restaurants and nighclubs.

Summer is the off season, so we got an excellent rate. And the kitchen saved us lots on money not having to eat out.
