Not a favorite after my last visit! Outside is run down, pool was green for over 12 hours, Happy hour wasn't, breakfast was minimal and received many bites from bugs. Our room was small, bed was a double instead of a queen, bathroom was worn and toilet barely flushed. No tub, just a small shower with a rusty shampoo holder. No soap, and after asking for some the manager searched our room before giving us 5 tiny bars. The inside is as worn down as the outside, and we did not pay an economy rate! Parking lot holds just 5 cars, and a $10 additional charge is imposed. The only bright spot is the location- 2 blocks to the marina, and 2 blocks to Duval street. Suggest looking elsewhere- there are dozens more B & B's that are nicer, and many more with free parking.
Unique Quality: None
Directions: Near the downtown area and marina's
The Garden House is a great little inn/b&b right next to downtown Key West. The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. They are also nice and cool, so it is easy to take a nap during the day to prep for a night on Duval St. (or recover after one!)
They have a little pool (it is shallow) but it is nice for cooling off. They also have a daily happy hour which is really fun, and a cool chance to meet the innkeepers and the other guests. Plus there's free wine and beer!
The breakfast is pretty basic, but included in the price of the room, which is great. Continental, but, included in the room price (which are pretty reasonable considering the place is like 1 block off Duval St.)
If you are interested in "luxury lodging", than Garden House probably isn't for you. But if you want somewhere safe, clean and not uber-expensive, than Garden House is a hit.
Unique Quality: They have 10 rooms, and very lovely landscaping that weaves throughout the inns. The pool has this fun and fancy waterfall at one end. There is also a nice upper deck that is great for sunbathing. The Royal Poinciana has a private porch with deck furniture. There is WiFi throughout, and the room has a little fridge for leftovers and late-night snacks.
You definitely do not need to bring your car, it is impossible to find parking (although Garden House does have a deal worked out with the church across the street so you can park for $10/day) and it is only 3 blocks to the ferry from the Inn. Plus, you can also rent bikes form the inn.
Has anyone here stayed at the Garden House in Key West or, if you're local, have you been there/do you know anything about it? Looks pretty promising from reading what I can find out on the Web, but I always like to hear people's personal takes on services, lodging, etc.
The Garden House is a perfect place for a Key West tropical paradise vacation. Its on the lower end of Elizabeth St. & they no longer accept pets & if you have children they have to be age 13. Its mostly for adults. The rooms are very clean & have a lot of charm. John & Connie who own Garden House are very friendly & fun to talk with. The pool is a little small but who care as long as you can cool off. You pick a good location, close to Duval St., quite for sleeping. Close to the Key West Bight & Historic Seaport where there is a couple of places to dine. Pepe's Cafe (breakfast, lunch & dinner) & Harpoon Harry's (breakfast only) on Caroline St., & Turtle Kraals & Half Shell Raw Bar to name a few. You are also close to Schooner Wharf Bar!
Thanks for confirming the impression I'd gotten from their Web page. And extra thanks for the cafe suggestions!
'preciate you taking the timee for so thorough an answer.
Thank you for your thoughtful reply & I don't mind trying to help anyone going to the Florida Keys. Sometimes my wife & I wish we tried all of the B & Bs but that can be hard to do. If we haven't stayed there at any of the named places for stay overs, we try to ask around & get some opinions from the locals or even visit the owners. Of course there are positives & negatives., but most of the time you receive good hospitality.
