Great Vacation!

The Island City House was a wonderful place to stay! Only a few blocks from Duval, great rooms that were clean and had a fun island feel. The pool was a great relief from the heat and was always clean. The concierge staff was always willing to give us directions or help us book trips! I would suggest booking a room with a balcony because the view of the palm trees and gardens was breathtaking. I would highly recommend staying at the Island City House. We may even go back next year!
A Beautiful Inn!!!

We loved the Island City House and will definitely stay there again when we return to Key West. We stayed in the main house, and breakfast was literally right outside our door. We found the hotel to be a quiet, wonderful oasis only a few short blocks from fun, outrageous Duval Street. We returned late at night to a well lit, safe hotel. The room was extremely clean. I will be recommending this place to all of my friends.
BELIEVE ME - THE BEST ON THE ISLAND!!!

Wonderful - laid back!!! This hotel embodies Key West. I copme to Key West once a year and have stayed at many other hotels & b-and-b's on the island (because island city house was booked). I am disappointed every time. Do yourself a favor and believe what I'm saying. This place is the best. Many of the less than 5 star reviews about this hotel were written by people who stayed in the big house. The property has a few houses on its property. The cigar house is where we stay and it is great. It is right on the pool, most of the rooms have its own porch complete with a hammock, it is quiet and the rooms are LARGE. They accomodate 4 with plenty of room. Only the bathroom is small. The staff is helpful. The breakfast is average. But the location is great... about 4 blocks from Duval Street. You won't be disappointed.
Even better than I expected

My wife and 2 kids (12 & 9) just returned from our first visit to Key West. I probably checked out 30 or 40 places on the internet before deciding on Island City House. Lets just say that when we return, my search will be very easy, because we will absolutely stay here again next time. We stayed in the Cigar House overlooking the pool. Good simple breakfast each morning right around the corner from our room. The room was very clean and perfect size (one bedroom with fold-out couch in the family room) for the four of us. It was very clean, the gardens, trees and pool area were beautiful. We parked our car when we checked in and didn't get back in it until we were leaving. It is about a five-ten minute walk to Duval St. We rented bikes from ICH for a day and explored more of the island including a very enjoyable visit to the Ft. Zachary Taylor beach. The staff was helpful, friendly, very low-key and relaxed. I was looking for a small hotel / b&b that was clean, relaxing and beautiful, and one that let the character of Key West shine through. Island City House was everything I hoped for and more!
Loved It!

My husband and I stayed in the at the Island City House two weeks ago and loved it. We were in their Arch House and had a great Jr. Suite. We had one of their smaller rooms, which was great for two. Our room was one of their street side rooms, which they very clearly explained when we made our reservations was a bit noisy, but being from Boston this was still quieter than our apartment. If you are used to a rural setting I would get one of their other rooms but if you are on a budget this is a great way to get in to a really nice place. Last thing they have a fantastic garden and super breakfast!
A great upscale Key West Inn

A friend recommend the Island City House Hotel and we were very pleased. Although this is a historic inn it was rather upscale and did not have that “old lady” feel of some other places that I have stayed. The staff was quite friendly and helpful in making dinner reservations. The location is also great, on the northern side of Old Town where the majority of the shops and activities are. If you do go to Key West you must stay in Old Town, New Town is just strip malls and not very fun.
Would stay again

We stayed for 10 days at the Island City House in July and thought it was great! As other reviewers have found, the staff can answer most questions and the place has real character. The grounds are clean, neat and the plantings are lush and interesting. The pool, although small, was great for the kids and they learned to swim in the 10 days that we were there! (Not for people who want to do a lot of laps.)
The continental breakfast is good for grabbing a few pieces of toast or a banana. It is not a gourmet thing.
Our two bedroom suite was clean and the beds very comfortable(firm mattresses). The bathroom has a marble floor and was very clean. Although I was originally slightly disappointed when I saw the shabbiness of some of the furniture(sofa, some chips in the wood of the bedroom funiture), I still much prefer the decor of the suite as a whole(antiquey, wood floors, tiffany style lamps, four-poster in the bedroom and double with a great dark wood headboard in the 2nd bedroom, neutral colours) when compared to the way most places are decorated.
There is a kitchen stocked with utensils and plates but it was not easy trying to cook a proper meal from scratch. One thing they really need is some proper chopping knives (of which there were none!).
They have bike rentals which was very handy for getting around. The prices are in line with bike rental businesses.
The location is ideal, especially on a bike. (On a bike, nothing is far in Key West.) One can hoof it with relative ease to all the major hot spots from the Island City House also.
For readers, the public library is literally 60 seconds walk away from the William Street entrace of the hotel. One can purchase a library card for 15USD. and get a year's borrowing privileges. That is the coolest thing.
If we ever go into Key West again, we would stay at the Island City House again, no question.

Bed and Breakfast

My wife and I are looking for a nice bed and breakfast for our tenth anniversay this January. The only requirements are good downtown-ish location, good breakfast, and no children. Can anyone recommend their top two or three choices? Thanks.

We've stayed at the Island City House a few times, it seems to meet all of your requirements.

DEFINATELY check out The Gardens Hotel on Angela Street. My fiance & I just stayed there for 3 lovely days in their Carriage House front room. If you look at the reviews on Tripadvisor for this place, you will not find any bad ones!! It was a lovely quiet retreat from downtown Duval St. - BUT close enough to walk ANYWHERE you wanted to go.
