Getting from the airport

by Kayeb

We will be flying in and need to know what transportation to take from the airport ? Do we need to rent a car , or will we be in walking distance to the public bus system etc ?

There is a public bus at the east end of the terminal around the curve. You could rent a car, but parking is a problem. Taxi into old town is another possiblity, about 20 USD. about 4 or five miles I guess. If just staying in Key west, catch the bus. If there is more than just you split the cab fare. A car rental if going outside to Marathon or Miami for the day. Cheers Tommy x

There is curbside taxi service offered at the airport so you will have that available. If you are planning on venturing off the island onto other Keys or even South Florida then I would recommend renting a car, also available at the airport. But if you plan to stay on Key West then I would say it's not worth it to rent a car and find parking. The island is 4 miles by 2 miles. Completely walkable, and nice for scenery!

Travel Tips for Key West

Why rent a room when you can rent a home?

by rockycomfort

Google: "Key West Vacation Home Rentals", You'll be led to a # of sites that offer weekly or daily house rentals, from small-but-nice conch cottages to condos to multi-bedroom homes. "VRBO" (Vacation Rental By Owner) is one such site. My wife & I do this 1-2x/year and its ALWAY$ less than room rates @ nice hotels, plus we get a full kitchen & washer/dryer--I like packin' light. These sites are viable pretty much across the US & Canada. Save $ and upgrade to nicer digs! Staying in a 2nd floor fully-equipped condo 1/2 block off Duval for way less $ than local hotels...

A beautiful building

by Laura_Mexico

One of Key West's beautiful buildings (I think this was a government office or something like that).... which you can appreciate all around the town!!

I love the small towns with distinctive architecture, and Key West has some buildings you can't easily see elsewhere in the USA. I also love the towns where the houses and buildings are as colorful and different from each other - yet uniform in style - as they are in Key West... I think this is what made me love this place more than anything else!

Gotta Go...

by twohandgrab

It's the thing to do and often there are street performers that really rock! I try to catch Fantasy Fest every year. Just when it is getting cold around the US, the weather is just perfect in Key West. Here's a picture of my two friends at Mallory Square. Beautiful sunsets, shirts optional.

Southernmost city in the contineltal US

by pulgaron

Most things are within walking if not bicycle distance. Live and let live attitude of local residents. Plenty of tourists looking for a good time. For some reason, people get here, and they want to let their hair down, so to speak. They will do things they would never do in their own city. Looking over the sunset, beyond it, and thinking how close I was to Cuba. The ocean smells. The fresh fish. The cold beer. This is the only place I don't care what brand of beer I drink. As long as it is cold, it's refreshing, and it tastes good to me.

Key West Tip

by rustreckless

Of Key West: Well, my fondest memories were when I first went there 16 years ago...since then it's continued to homogenize itself, like most other places that become the destination of the rich and trendy. Key West's whole claim to fame has always been it's 'funkiness' and unfortunately, funky is getting priced out. Still, it can be a lot of fun!
