More about Mermaid & The Alligator
My husband and I just recently stayed at the Mermaid & Alligator for our honeymoon. The house was decorated beautifully and the garden was like walking into a dream. The concierge was extremely helpful and always available to answer questions or make our reservations for us. She also took into account that Key West is not a cheap vacation area and gave us more economical ideas for dinner and tours. The owners were wonderful and made us feel right at home. The first night there we did not feel like going out for dinner so we ordered pizza and ate in their kitchen at the bar. We never felt like intruders and the owners actually joined us with their meal. While we were there we went on a tour that we were not happy with, and mentioned it in a casual conversation with one of the owners. He actually called the tour owner and made sure we got most of our money back. We were very pleased the next morning when they showed up with our refund especially since we were not expecting it. The bottom line is the Mermaid and Alligator went way beyond our expectations, and we would go back in a heart beat!
A Wonderful Oasis
We stayed in the Key Lime Room for 2 nights and one night in the Tree Tops Suite.
The Key Lime Room is just wonderful. Not large but very adequate. It is in a conch house at the side of the garden with a wonderful outside seating area complete with white rocking chairs. The king size bed was extra comfortable and the a/c was first class. The small finishing touches made this an extra special stay... The whole house is full of interesting objects and compliments the laid back atmosphere We also stayed in the Tree Tops Suite for one night... A very large loft suite with sunken bath at one end that overlooked the "treetops!". This suite does not have a balcony so would not suit everyone but it is very special. For me personally I did feel slightly confined even though the suite is very large. The gardens are an oasis.. We arrived about 3 weeks after Hurricane Wilma so there was a small amount of foliage damage but that will soon grow back it is very tranquil. there are a couple of cages with small tropical birds which add to the ambience of the house..there are also two wonderful laid back dogs that add to the character of the house. The staff are friendly and helpful. you have full use of internet which is great. I would not hesitate to recommend this B&B to anyone. A wonderful find!!
Just one point... As it is on Truman Ave there is a small amount of noise but after an evening in Key West you will sleep soundly and will not be a problem.
We ate in three restaurants in Key West : Michaels (fantastic), NineOneFive (excellent) Mangoes (V.good).. Should have visited Mangoes for lunch the menu is extensive but for some reason in the evening it is limited.. we also had lunch at Grand Cafe that was excellent. We love Key West's relaxed way of living and staying at the Mermaid & Alligator enhanced this.
Felt like I was in a Better Homes and Gardens magazine!
Fantastic little find!!!! Run by two male partners with an amazing sense of design--the house and grounds are stunnign and SOOO Key West feeling! The only downside is that it's a little far from the main strip but if you don't mind walking it's not bad. The Garden room is right off the front door with is a little weird but the house is quiet. Great place!!!! PS--The website really does the place no justice--the site feels tacky but the owners and house are pure class!
Won't be disappointed
We are headed back to Key West for our third trip this winter. We stayed at Mermaid our first time down. We were amazed at the quality and kindness offered to us by everyone who worked there. We ended up meeting many of the people staying at the inn and even went out for dinner with them one night - we were all from different parts of the globe! The rooms are uniquely decorated and very comfortable. The wine cocktail hour was a wonderful surprise. The only somewhat annoying thing was the sound of mopeds all hours of the day or night but if you stay in Key West you have to expect that. I would recommend this Inn to anyone.
Absolutely Perfect Getaway!
We stayed at The Mermaid & The Alligator last week for our honeymoon and it was wonderful! The house is beautiful and the atmosphere surrounding the B&B is just lovely. There is a cozy little sitting area on the back porch where several of the guests congregated in the evenings for a glass of wine and it ended up being our favorite spot in the whole house.
The weather was perfect so breakfast was served outside in the mornings and it was wonderful as well. Fresh muffins, yogurt and fruit but we also had a hot entree every morning and the coffee was delicious.
The owners Dean & Paul were friendly and polite but so unobtrusive you hardly knew they were there. It was almost like having the house to ourselves. They had lots of recommendations for local attractions and restaurants. Dana, the concierge, was also very nice and a big help in scheduling some of our excursions.
Overall, I just loved this B&B and will definitely be returning. The only thing I would suggest is that you bring your own pillows if you prefer feather or softer support. Theirs weren't bad, just a little firmer than I'm used to at home.
Loved the Mermaid and the Alligator!
Stayed in the Mermaid & the Alligator on the 31st October for five nights. Was able to come to Key West and the Mermaid, a night earlier than expected due to 'hurricane Wilma'. Flew to FLL from Scotland and came straight down to Key West as there was no power in my friends house in FLL. The night we arrived, there was an outage in KW, but our host met us at the door with lanterns, and showed us to our room. We had the 'Garden room', which was absoloutly beautiful! Beautiful accommodations, with lots of little touches to make our stay more pleasant. Hot breakfast every morn, with fresh muffins, coffee, and every tea you could want. Dayna helped us with any questions re excursions, and also found us alternative accom, when we decided to prolong our stay, as they were full up. Havana (black retriever pup) came to our room most morns (and some eve's) to say 'hello' and play!...The owners dog..(hope Largo's doing ok?) Beautiful B&B, amazing house, full of lovely artefacts and every comfort you could wish for. Highly reccommended to everyone! Would love to be there now!
A Great Stay, Away from the Noise!
The Mermaid and the Alligator was a great B&B. Lush, unique gardens surrounding the house made for a private and quiet stay.
We stayed in the Bamboo Room, which was right next to the main house, in a seperate cottage: what a fantastic room! very spacious and well-decorated, with our own private porch.
Dean, one of the owners, and the conceirges were very helpful and kind. Jennifer set us up on great kayak and snorkel trips, and Dayna told us about some great restaurants (Seven Fish and Mangia Mangia were the best restaurants, and not too touristy). The great thing about this B&B was that the staff was not overly intrusive...you have privacy, but you also feel welcome. Stay here if you want a quiet, refined, and relaxing visit in Key West.
Extra bonus for dog lovers, the owners have 2 sweet flat-coated retrievers!
Chilling with Largo and Hava
Dean and Paul have done a fantastic job and we enjoyed our stay at this cozy Bed and Breakfast very much. Breakfasts were delicious and the wine hour was a perfect time to chat with others and meet new people before heading out to dinner. We stayed at one of the smaller rooms, but we were real comfortable. Everyone was very friendly and all staff very professional. Hava and Largo, the two resident dogs, were real friendly and we had some good laughs every morning when Hava would show up with new found treasures.
Location was also perfect. We were close enough to everything, but far enough from all the noise. We mostly walked everywhere from the B&B and rented a bike to explore the other side of the island.
All and all we highly recommend this place and if you stay there, make sure you check out Seven Fish for dinner one night. Ask the staff and they will help you with reservations.
Mermaid and Alligator is the perfect place to stay in Key West. To address two year + old reviews, if you want a spring break atmosphere or to swim laps in an Olympic pool go somewhere else. If you want lush gardens, fantastic rooms, and peace and quiet, come here. Located about half between the east and west coasts, it is ideally located. It's a 6 mintue bike ride from Mallory Square to the B&B. On location parking but don't rent a car if you're not driving. No need, bikes, scooters, or walking is the way to go. Jennifer will set up dinner or other reservations. Highly recommend 7 Fish. Low key but great!!!
