A Typical Key West Inn

Sal and I got away for a weekend escape at the Red Rooster Inn. Lovely grounds, landscaped pool and decks, coffee bar in the lobby and clothing-optional sundeck on the roof. We especially enjoyed the wraparound second-floor porch overlooking Truman Avenue, just two blocks from Duval Street where we took lots of pictures.

Unique Quality: Inn rooms are smallish, usually without TVs. Fronting Truman Avenue (US 1) in downtown Key West, be sure to ask for a room away from the street. The backyard, however, is another world. Soak in a huge (by Key West standards) pool, and enjoy the complimentary continental breakfast in the garden.

The staff is pleasant and helpful. Limited free parking, but they do their best to fit you in. Bikes and mopeds (ugh!) can be rented a block away. All of Key West is within walking distance.

More about Red Rooster Inn

UNDERSTAND THE ISLAND

by TripAdvisor Member wildelms

If you understand island life, then you'll understand the Red Rooster. The rooms, pool and bathing area are perfect. You are down in the keys for island life, not the room. I've been staying at the Red Rooster for the last two years. I will continue to stay in an establishment which treats me like family and welcomes me with open arms.

Something for everyone

In April 2002, I had a small wedding in Key West (32 people)..The Chelsea
House was able to accommodate us all...For my husband & I, we stayed in the Hibiscus suite-King Bed,Full Kitchen, large bathroom....My other guests
stayed in various rooms..Everyone was happy...It was great to be able to all stay in the same place--MANY other B&B's wouldn't even try to accommodate me & my guests....The Chelsea house even let me Cater a party out by the pool!! the day my guests arrived into town...They were wonderful to all of us.....The day of my wedding, my taxi never showed up---So the owner himself drove my friend and I to the salon to get ready for the ceremony......The rooms are all different sizes--it really depends what you want...A few blocks away is a bike rental place, which is perfect!Leave your car in the lot and go....I prefer B&B's because they're casual, quaint, and have the better locations....As far a price --I found Chelsea House to be fairly low compared to many others...The pool area is great...There's even a more "private" upper sundeck...The continental breakfast is average--but at least they offer something! (Bagels,toast,muffins)..I love to crawl out of bed and have coffee right there, rather than venturing out to find a place for breakfast....My only suggestion is find out about the room your renting--ask about space and what it offers....(For those reviews I read ,that were dissapointed)...If you're someone who is planning on spending alot of time in your room, first of all why go to Key West? And you should go stay at a resort......All and all I thought Chelsea House was really nice.........

A Great Place in Key West

by A TripAdvisor Member

This Hotel has character. Rooms are charming with some antique furniture and semi private balonies. Beautiful gardens, sundecks and pool. Serves breakfast each morning to guests as part of the room cost. Not the typical continental breakfast either. Centrally located in Old Town. They also have pet friendly rooms available. I would use this hotel again!

Just say no to predictable, boring, overpriced chain motels

by TripAdvisor Member SoCal_Chainsaw

We stumbled into Key West without reservations on a Sunday knowing absolutely nothing about the place other than there are a bunch of dudes walking around who look kind of like Hemingway. Luckily, we found the Chelsea House. It has every bit of the funky, cosmopolitan charm a place like Key West should provide.

Concierge “Jayson” was instrumental in helping us discover Key West. He set us up with reservations to the awesome Seven Fish restaurant (which also happens to be just up the block), and he turned us on to Rick’s Blue Heaven for “breakfast with the roosters.” (Okay, Jayson also sent us to PT’s Late Night Bar & Grill. But nobody’s perfect.)

The only down side is the very tight parking. But you don’t really need a car in Key West. Unless you’re in town selling janitor supplies.

And unless you really are in town selling janitor supplies, please just say no to the predictable, boring, overpriced chain motels just this once. Key West requires more of an effort than that.

Chelsea House would be a pretty good start to your wild, new, anti-franchised Key West lifestyle. Next thing you know, you’ll be shopping Duval Street for a frigging Che Guevara T-shirt!
