We didn't stay at the Southernmost Motel, but we walked past it several times. I'm posting the tip as an alternative for folks looking for a basic but comfortable motel setting in Key West. The SM looks to be clean and well-situation, plenty of parking and very close to all the major items of interest in Key West. The Hemingway House and Lighthouse are maybe three blocks away. Even the hike to Mallory Square isn't more than about 8-9 blocks down Duval Street.
Quite honestly, this was the best lookin "motel" on the southern end of Key West. There are some pricier and fancier "hotel" type places (Hyatts or something) on the north/west side, near Mallory Square. I"m sure they're way more money than the Southernmost. Now, I have no qualms about spending "more money" sometimes, but I like to feel like I"m getting something special. The NW side Hyatts, etc. aren't special IMHO. If you want to spend more money, I'd suggest moving to my next tip, the Southernmost Bed and Breakfast Inn. This hotel is one of the few at Key West that has beach access. The beach is small but you can swim in the Gulf there without paying any fees. Also, has 3 nicely maintained pools, two tiki bars, and a jacuzzi. If you rented a car, this hotel has free parking, and you're going to need it, since parking in Key West is expensive and difficult. Attractions: It's one block from the Southernmost monument and the Butterfly Conservatory, a short walk to Hemingway's house and the Key West lighthouse. Several nice restaurants are close buy on Simonton and on Duval. To walk from Southernmost to Mallory Square is about 30 minutes if you don't stop anywhere, about 1.5 miles. It's not a bad walk, though in the heat of summer it can be quite grueling. Our room was clean and well-maintained. The grounds are nice and the service was good. Unlike hotels on Duval Street in the midst of the action, Southernmost is quiet, if you like to sleep in. I wish we'd have had a shorter walk to the end of Duval, but we did go to Key West in August, so if you're there during more temperate weather, it would probably be perfect for you. I'd stay here again.
